    cutting and crowning a barrel

is this something that can be done without a lathe, or is it something best let to the professionals?

if it matters at all, its a $40 virgin ak barrel that hasn't been pressed into the receiver yet

i was thinking hacksaw to length using a pipe clamp to keep the muzzle square, and doing something (magic?) about the crown

about the project, me and 4 of my buddy's are building aks and one of them wanted to be different and make a pistol instead of a rifle(hasten built it up as either one as of now)

ya that crown reamer he uses is like 85 bucks. im thinking it will cost that much for a smith to cut, crown and thread(does anyone do left hand threads?)

Manson has a kit geared towards military rifle owners that's only about $115. Add the 0 degree cutter and you have a decent kit to recrown anything around 7.62" bore:

There will also be some re-profiling involved. Lots of people here can do that for you. First ones that come to mind would be Valkyrie arms, turbothis, and restoreit1. There are several others, but those three immediately come to mind. I'm sure others will post up shortly.

i actually measured the profile of the bbl and i determined that to move the gas block back, i would only need to cut about .025 off the barrel. problem is that i don't have a mill. i may consider actually removing that from the gas block. im also thinking about integrating the gas block and the front sight ala tig welding the two together. anyone have experience with either of these mods?

What? How long of a barrel does your buddy want for his pistol? Your gonna want to move that gas block back some to get the correct dwell time, if not you could run into cycling problems. You wanna know why Krinks have those funky looking brakes on them, to create more back pressure so they will cycle reliably.

looking for the 10-11 inch range...which is essentially right to the end of the gas block. i was thinking just drill a massive gas port

Going from 16" to 12.5" was enough reason for the Hungarians to shorten the gas system of the AMD65.

It sounds like you want to go shorter but stick with the long gas system. Not a very wise decision.

Since this is your first rodeo, I suggest you closely copy an AMD65 or a Draco.
