Why move the trigger assembly in AK build?

This is probably a really dumb question, but here it is. I know next to nothing about converting an AK including what is being converted and why. I do understand that in order to get the pistol grip on, the trigger group needs to be moved forward. That seems to create a lot of work, right?

Why not just leave the trigger group where it is and buy a new stock that has a pistol grip attached to the stock (like a shotgun)?

With a few other easy part swaps, I'm guessing this could be made to comply with 922.

What am I missing? Does no one manufacture such a stock? Why not? Perhaps one of our entrepreneurial Calgunners could develop one.

You must be talking about a Saiga conversion. You could go with a Tapco stock/pistol grip combo if that works for you but a lot of people converting Saigas do it because they want to build a 100 series clone. Plus the trigger on the Saiga isn't as nice as on an AK because you have that intermediate linkage.

they do offer PG stocks that can be used on Saiga that allow you to keep the Saiga FCG.

Howerver, the Saiga FCG is not as good a FCG as a standard AK, so there is a benefit to moving the FCG forward.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

People that want a sporter buy a Saiga and leave it alone.

People that want an AK buy a Saiga and restore the trigger to AK configuration.

People who are lazy (or got a drugonov style Saiga stock for free like me) buy a Saiga and change out just the stock.
