ive read tons of threads on here and all over the web on how to parkerize guns. my question is where do you get the burners and tanks from. also if anyone knows which kind of parkerize is better than the other.

You can use an outdoor stove that you would use for camping, and use a propane tank to heat it. A guy on ebay used to sell small and medium sized tanks, but I just checked, and I cant seem to find him.

        Here's a company that sells tanks. http://www.stainlesssteelcreations.net/

I think you can find the propane burner @ Harbor Freight.

Haha. I was looking for this guy the other day as well.

Brownelles has a 40" black iron tank that is $55 after shipping. It isn't as ideal as SS, but it will work. I have one for backup.

Harbor Freight also has electric range burners for >$20.

As for whether Manganese or Zinc, I chose Manganese as it is supposed to produce the darkest color. And with Lauer's concentrate from MidwayUSA.com at $26.99 it was hard to justify "experimenting" with a home brew that can easily get screwed up.

I even started with Chaffing pans from restraunt supply store like many people recommend. Can do an AK barrel or receiver (or both at the same time) but NOT a barreled receiver.

I hosted a build party back in October and the generic park setup we used worked great! We parked around 20 recievers and rifles and as far as I know everyone was really pleased! We used a park tank (thanks Rhino) similar to the one provided a few post's above mine. Calguns member weezil_boi (you da man)donated some park solution. And I bought these burners from Harbor Frieght hooked them up to a BBQ propane tank and it ran like a champ for quite a few hours. I was told to run the solution at 180 degree's so I ran down to Target and picked up a cooking thermometer the one in the link below is the one I used and it evem has a stainles steel clip that lets it attach to the side of the park tank. Not sure what kind of park solution we used but I have recently got some of the Lauers Custom Weaponry Park Solution and am looking forward to giving it a try. Also another member recommended shredding up some steel wool and adding it to the park solution to "spice it up" Well Dont know if it helped but with the great results we had I am going to keep on adding it!

You should also consider some rubber gloves and maybe some bailing wire for suspending the parts while dunking. After parking fresh water WD-40 and some soft bristle brushes will help you finish the job.

            Burners $40

            Tank adapter $15

            Thermometer $15

            Park Solution $31

Here is a picture of one of the rifles from the BP! (Thanks BLD)

haha, nice. Great minds think alike.
At CSA's Ak BP, 2 parties ago?? I parked mine for about 30 or so min at 180, and the damn thing came out damn near black. I also put motor oil on it every day for the first week. Its lightened up a tad bit, but nothing major. Its much darker then the one DREADNOUGHT78 posted.

I like to saturate in motor oil, wrap in oily paper towel, and then wrap in saran wrap for a week.

I might try some of the expensive after park solutions if I get any problems. None so far!

So, simply get a tank, fill is with the parkerizing solution, heat it up put the part in, wait, take the part out, rinse, soak in motor oil (opt). Is it really that easy?

What is required of the tank? Would an aluminum turkey pan work (as long as the parts fit) are there any specs for the tank?

Preparing the part takes a lot of time. The part should be around 400 grit smooth and degreased.

Aluminum won't work, as parkerizing work with an acid. Either phosphoric, or nitric, depending on what type of park and who made it. Lauer manganese(black or charcoal grey) uses phosphoric acid, and Radocy park(med to dark grey) uses nitric acid. I like Radocy, but it is pricier than Lauer.
Tank really should be stainless steel.
Here is a Garand I did in home made manganese park(Jasco Prep N Primer for the phosphoric acid, and manganese dioxide from a pottery supply store).

One thing though. If you want the end result to be grayish, use the zinc phosphate parkerizing solution suggested above. If you want it to be very dark gray or black, use manganese phosphate:

Honestly the $5 mud pan at harbor freight is the bomb, its stainless steel so it wont rob youre solution, also its not just 100% park solution, you usually mix it with distilled water.

I got a $11 propane burner from HF and the mud pan for $5, then a propane tank for like 3-4 bucks. Super easy, just make sure to degrease real good and blast it with something like WD-40 as soon as it comes out otherwise it may crystal up and give you some discolorations.

I just did my mauser receiver, it turned out incredible.

PS the mud pan needs to be sealed at the edges and the solution i use is from duracoat.

One additional thought, blast the HECK out of the receiver or you'll get a gray out of the Lauers as well. Hit the surface from different angles and be sure to use good media.

I'm going to try some of Lauers "black dip" pre-park solution for next time.

Be sure to RINSE it first with clean water, then dry it with compressed air, heat gun, or rinsed in BOILING water before WD-40. If you don't rinse, you get green tints. If you have gobs of water still on the part no amount of WD will remove it all and you'll get rusting the very next day.

Do I need to stop up the barrel so no fluid gets in it? Is there anything that can't/shouldn't be parkerized?
