    Severe rust removal

A friend of mine recently inherited a Ruger Super Blackhawk that was submerged in a flood over 10 years ago, never cleaned, wraped in a towel, and put in a bag. It looks exactly how you would expect.

Any suggestions on removing the rust and restoring the revolver?

I like chelating agents. You can use molasses, but I prefer Evaporust since it doesn't have any sugar or organics that can rot. It will remove any oxidization, including bluing, so beware.

You have no idea how happy I am to see this info about electrolysis. I've got an IDF Mauser that's in just awful shape. Completely tragic condition after its time in Central America. I cleaned it up good when I got it in about 2005, but I just can't seem to keep the rust from coming back. I took it apart again this weekend to start (finally) cleaning the crap off the stock ... and sure enough, the gun is just filthy with rust. Again.

This weekend, I think it'll be time for me to put together an electrolysis tank ... I've got a good power supply for it from the battery charger for my RC-10T ...

if you got the time, drop it in a bucket of deisel for a day or two. then heat the metal either in the sun or blow dryer take a bullet casing to scrape the rust off. Works like a champ, and "usually" the blueing stays. good luck

Naval jelly then black spray paint for what is left. Why spend more than you have to. At best it will be a shooter "truck" gun.

A good coat of AlumaHyde II will fill in the pits nicely.

Was thinking along the line of SVT-40, naval jelly, sand, and paint (duracoat or gun kote). Thanks for the tips, will look into electrolysis and AlumaHyde II.

If you're going to go through the process of using acids and sandpaper to get rid of the rust, I strongly recommend using Evaporust. You can pick up a jug at Harbor Freight, Ace Hardware, etc. You don't have to worry about corrosion after using it and if you don't wash it off, it will protect from further rusting for at least a month, oftentimes much longer. If you use it in a plastic tub, the Evaporust can be used over and over again, just add more water as it evaporates, the active ingredients don't seem to degrade very fast.

I used to use naval jelly for rust removal, but I'm a true believer in chelation agents now. I only use acids for phosphating now.

Researched Straykillers suggestion - electrolysis. This seems to be really easy and damn near free (I have everything on hand exept Baking Soda), and produced terrific results. So I plan on trying that this weekend. Will post before and after pictures. Thanks for the suggestions.
