S&W 629 barrel switching question

Can anyone tell me how to swich out a barrel on a S&W 629 44 Mag.

yes. You post on here who a GOOD smiths name that does lots of revolvers and has experience. Ill mess around with some things on my guns clean or take it apart to really clean it but thats about it. Real gunsmithing should be left to a gunsmith IMO. And there are varying degrees of good when it coomes to smiths. pay for the better one that wont f**k up your guns

Switching the long 'Dirty Harry' barrel to a 3". I got a quote from a gunsmith for $100.

Check and see what is the value of your gun first. If it is a early 6.5" gun in good shape then don't mess with it.

It sounds to me the 'smith will just cut and crown the barrel. I've seen the front sight attached slanted. If memory serves the front sight height is different on the short barrel gun, especially compare to a 8 3./8" barrel.

Is this a pinned barrel. I think those might be easier to change out than the later pressed barrels.
$100 sounds good if he has good references for his work.

My gunshop guy is ordering the barrel on monday. It's my father-in-laws gun and I don't think he wants to deal with selling then buying another. It is a good idea though.

your barrel is 8.375" long

it isn't hard to unscrew the old barrel and screw on the new one (BTW:the pinned barrels are harder)...all you need is a vise, something to stabilize the barrel and an axe handle. the hard part is getting the barrel correctly "clocked" which can entail machining and filing and then setting the cylinder gap.

My default S&W pistolsmith is Randy Lee of Apex Tactical in the Morro Bay area...but shipping would cost you more than what your local guy is charging. Do you trust your local guy to do it correctly?
