Shorten a barrel- need to knows??

I want to shorten the barrel on one of my .22's- If I have a machine shop cut it square/even, what else do I need to be aware of? My 10/22 barrel does not have a noticable crown, so what about the crown? Any thing else to ask about, think about.

It will need to be crowned -- crown style of your choice -- When the machinist cuts it in the lathe it is a simple follow up job to crown it with the same set-up. Make sure your machinist understands the reason and procedure to crown.
A lot of barrels have been carefully cut by hand, trued up, then crowned using the head of a round head brass screw, lapping compound, and a hand drill.
Brownells also sell a tool for crowning --

If the barrel can come off the receiver, send it to: www.ar15barrels.com

He can cut it and crown it for you.

I am hoping to find someone in the Santa Rosa area that has a garage type machine shop to help. Any one interested? I can pay you with a brick of 22lr.

If you have a machine shop cut it so it's "square and even" then it will allready be in a lathe and the clean-up cut on the muzzle would be included in the service. Just tell the guy to set the compound at 11* and cut from the center out with a sharp tool.

The important thing is that the barrel is cut perfectly square to the bore of the barrel. This means that when your machinist sets it up in the lathe, he indicates the bore to near-zero runout, not the OD of the barrel. He should insewrt a snug fitting gage pin into the muzzle and indicate off that, in two places, to less than .ooo5 runout in both places. Only after the bore is dialed in perfectly should he cut and crown.

The bore and the OD of a barrel are never concentric. If the barrel is dialed in on the OD, you will not get a perfect crown, which will affect accuracy.

Got to this thread on page one. OP has pics of the tools needed to square and crown a barrel.

I do not have anything lined up yet. I have this idea I would like to cut my barrel down to 17", not saying it's a good idea, just an idea. Here is a pic of my rifle, it has a 22" barrel now and I would like to make it more handy.
I do not want to spend $$ if you know what I mean.

                  1/2 hour of labor

Band saw it for the rough cut

Mount barrel in 4 jaw chuck and locate it's center off a spund in the muzzle.
Make a couple cuts to square off the muzzle, then use the compund to cut the crown at 11*

All of it should be done on the same setup, which is the most time consuming part.
