    Another spot

Another spot to check is where the extractor hook goes into a slot in the barrel. Sometimes when a new barrel is put in and the extractor is not centered in the slot or checked for clearance. Just because it uses a V-block doesn't mean it is perfect, there is usually some give, and just enough to cause this problem. Of the two ruger 10/22's that I have both required a bit of break in and like was stated above the operating rod has a tendency to look and feel like a machine screw. I removed most of that problem with a scotch brite buffer on a die grinder. Just feed it a few different types till it runs smooth and tells you what it likes. Oh and if it stovepipes, make sure you hold the stock securely because any cushion or give back will short stroke the bolt because you are absorbing the energy and not the spring.

Sounds like something a few 1000 rds would clear up... I have one that did similar stuff...

As previously noted, the chamber tolerance should be checked.

Also, when installing the barrel, before you tighten it down, "feel" the alignment of the extractor claw in it's notch to make sure that it is centered.

It wouldn't hurt to polish the extractor sides and check the free travel of the firing pin as well. If you look at a custom firing pin they frequently have more of a taper, or relief, on the top edge of the pin (than the stock pin) which allows it to travel a little further forward in the bolt. I also polish the sides and edges of the firing pin as they usually have a lot of rough edges.

Make sure that the firing pin has a crisp, square point on it. You can also file a slight concave on the bevel of the firing pin tip to give it a more pronounced profile.

Sorry guys I don't have any pictures....

Because the gun worked great today!!!!

I bought 330 rounds of winchester bulk .22lr ammo and 100 rounds of CCI mini mags and only had one ftf, and that one ftf was when I tried to use my Remington bulk pack ammo.

I had zero jams with the winchester and cci, the one fail to fire I turned the round around in the chamber and it fired (I was going to take a picture of the round but I lost it.

Guess it was just a ammo problem

No, No, your gun MUST have a problem that we here on the internet can help fix or have helped you fix.

Your the-problem-is-resolved-with-a-change-of-ammo update is appreciated but far too anti-climactic.

I agree ammo. Try CCI. The Wolf Match targets are well liked by my 10/22.

Edit: Glad to see you solved the problem.

Well maybe you did, I did completely take apart the bolt and firing pin, that might have helped!

I thought there was something bigger wrong because I did try two different types of ammo.

                      Polish your Rod

                      I agree with this statement...

Check the recoil spring guide rod. The rod itself should be smooth. Some new rods I have seen are so rough they seem to be threaded, which causes the bolt to hang up and not close completely all the time. Polish the guide rod smooth or replace it with the aftermarket one of your choice. Be sure to lightly oil it.

That factory rod is a POS. Dont struggle long polishing, the replacement is cheap!

New recoil and hammer springs, unpolished bearing surfaces, soft ammo = musket. Run a brick or two of hot ammo, clean and lube after each session and it'll be fine.

Lex helped me polish mine and although I have not had a chance to shoot it yet, you can feel the improvement once it is back together.

Glad to see you got your 10/22 running. Since your rifle doesn't like to extract dud rounds you might want to install a volquartson extractor. This extractor will pull them out and is well worth it. $10.95 here shipped. http://www.hawktecharms.com/ruger/10-22.htm# Mark
