    mauser 98

OK I have a mauser 98 action and am looking for some ideas on what to build.

    I have a 30.06 so I don't know if I would want to build a 308 and I have a 243 so what can I build ???

I reload so I don't have to worry about finding ammo just brass and bullets...

    give me some ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!
Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.

Best gun I ever owned was a 257 Roberts on a Mauser 98 action with a Timney trigger. Scary accurate and mild to shoot.

I have built many......257 Roberts is a wonderful caliber, The short rounds (308-243) sometimes have some feeding problems with the 98 unless you shorten the cartridge box. 35 Whalen is also great if you are a hunter. My first one I built into a 308 Norma magnum because the case was the correct length for the action. It worked better than the longer 300 Winchester. It just depends on you. It is a simple task to open the bolt face to magnum dimensions to use magnum cases. Much easier than shortening the cartridge box. I have a pre-war Mauser sporter in 8X57. There is nothing wrong with that caliber and the 7X57 is a perfect balance for most field work (nearly Identical to the 280 Remington) . The 7MM has a great bullet variety available. I love Double set triggers and machined rib barrels. Probably from living in Germany so many years. So, Do some study and have fun............

hey just a note but the 9.3X62 is sooo bad you dont even want to know!!!!
and the m24/47 and 48's have an intermediate action and the mag box is not long enough for most XX-'06 loaded ammo so you are limited to Xx57 or less with that i mind a 6.5 sweed or mauser, 257 bob, 6mm rem, 7x57, and the the non mag mag the 284 win it is also so bad you dont even want to know!!!

The 9.3X62 is a very nice round but is very close to the length of the 06. The 7x57 class cartridges are .3" shorter. If you have the action length, I think that a more common magnum caliber would be equal and much eaiser to find ammo and components for. Have you looked at the 375 Ruger? 225 grains @ 3000 FPS and the same length as an 06.

Ok I have some more info on the receiver, it is a federal ordnance with the Mauser stamp on the top front.

any info on one of these?

Federal Ordnance was a Rosemead company that did a lot of importing of military guns. Some the put there personal stamp on. (like yours) It has no collector value but probably is a good shooter. They bought a bunch of unmarked barreled actions, checked the head space and sold them as shooters. I never could get them to tell me where they were built. I was building a lot of Mauser's at the time and there prices were good. They were a big mail order house but had a retail store in Rosemead that was always fun to visit. I bought a lot of stuff from them (and sold them some too). I am not sure why they shut down....(bankruptcy, loss of licence or whatever)

Cool, thanks I don't buy stuff as a collector I shoot all my guns and after selling my .22 revolver I bought at a Salt Lake City gunshow when I was 15. I will never sell another one of my guns, I figure it this way if I don't like it my kids or when I have some grand kids will get them.

When fed ord closed down their retail shop, they had a big auction.
I ended up with a Daewoo DR200 and an EAA witness for about $200 each.
Both were new in the box.
