    Simple Gunsmith work help

    Hi,

does anyone know if there is a SF bay area gunsmith that I can find for a SUPER small job? I have an antique and as usual I put a dummy round in the chamber as a standard safely procedure. After pulling the trigger just to make sure it is in, I could not get it back out. I have cleaning rods, or some other metal type rods, but I could not push it out. This is not a regular rubber or plastic dummy round, but a standard metal type. Also, it dawns to me that the caliber of this antique is actually SMALLER than .22. A tiny bit smaller, but the headache is now bigger.

If you have the right tools, I am sure you can get the dummy out within 5 minutes.

I prefer somewhere in the east bay, and I do not want to go beyond Vallejo, same thing I do not want to go further than San Rafael.

Hi, Vince; Call Bill Martin 510-407-4602 (he's in Castro Valley. Or stop by San Leandro Range in the morning; he's often there, but leaves when the shooting starts.)

If it's a dummy round, just stick a rod down the muzzle and tap it out with a hammer. Be prepared to replace the rod if you screw up the ferrule though. A length of brass rod would be preferable.

^ That, brass rod. If you can use a drill to put a small divet into the end so that it hits the bullet and doesn't jump off when you tap it.

If it went in with just a firing pin strike it can't be in there too tight.

      Oh yeah:

Telling someone its easy and takes only 5 min = $75.00
Just asking for some help = often much less or just free.

Put the cylinder on a small socket that is just bigger than the base of the round. Then take a drill just smaller than the bullet and drop the end you put in the chuck in then give the bit end a tap with a small hammer. Job done.

What makes you think that there is a cylinder?

              Sorry everyone....
As much as I dislike being critical of others. This is something that needs to be stated if for any reason... Safety.

Regarding gunsmiths in the Bay Area. Bill Martin. Do not use him for any reason whatsover. Reason?

He very recently (within 8 weeks) took in a brand new gi 1911 RIA to have the following work done.
              ---Trigger and Trigger Job.
              ---Accurizing
              ---Match Barrel
              ---BeaverTail grip safety
              ---Hammer replacement.
              ---Thumb safety
              ---Slide release button
---Set of fiber optic TruGlo Sights installed.

What was promised a 2 week job turned into 2 months.

The trigger was not replaced as agreed and on estimate.

              The trigger was lightened.

              No match barrel replaced.

              No accurizing work done.

              No Hammer replacement.

              No Beavertail grip safety replaced.

              No thumb safety.

              No Slide release button.

And worst of all... Is the machine work for the rear Novac cut on the rear part of slide for rear sight. IS MACHINED AT A NOTICEBLE ANGLE. NOT AT A 90 DEGREE TO TO LENGTH OF SLIDE...

The simple fact he is unable to machine a simple Novac cut straight either using a simple jig or a mill is inexcusable. Now I have to replace the slide.

To compound matters further the rear sight fell off while shooting.

If you want to keep your guns in any form of safe working operation DO NOT USE BILL MARTIN FOR ANY REASON.

Sorry, but the fact he didnt admit to this mistake. Order a new slide. Or try to make this right when a child can see its machined crooked is just plain wrong.

If the forum would like me to post images I would be happy to do so. I really dislike saying negative things. Just dont have time for it.

Best to all... Oh... And if you are using him... Go get your stuff back now regardless if its started or finished... Dont take any chances.

Are you referring to such as shove a wooden dowel in there, and beat on it with a hammer?

                  That's my all time favorite.

^^^^^^Depends on the material and characteristics of the wooden dowel..

It's better when they shove a dowel down BOTH ENDS!

                          Hey Randall,
<removed to protect the guilty> rifle. I tied to slug the barrel from the muzzle and the dowel broke.
Followed with a dowel from the action end to knock it out and that dowel broke.
Then tried the cleaning rod going forward from the action. Hammered and and now cleaning rod stuck.
Then placed a brass tube thru the muzzle to drill out the wood and slug.
                          Can you help?
I don't want to make things worse (if that's possible).

Do you check the chamber for live rounds by pulling the trigger too?

If I'm reading this right, you have a .22 dummy jammed in a <.22 chamber? Hope you find somebody who knows their way around a drill press.
