    Help building AK

A friend of mine had a couple AK kits laying around for the past few years. He is not very mechanically inclined, but I am. I've been machining for over 13 years, and pretty handy with tools. He made me a deal, if I build both kits, I can have one. So I started on one kit a few weeks ago. I made a bend fixture and bent the first receiver flat. It looks really good and measures correct to the specs I found online. Now I have to remove the barrel from the front trunnion and press in a few rivets. I was hoping someone around San Diego would assist me in this since I don't have the fixture for the barrel, or a press. I also need a tool for the rivets, I saw a few people have taken bolt cutters and made a pocket in the jaws for this. I was hoping someone would either let me borrow these tools, or better yet, assist me in this. I can provide food and as many beverages as needed. I don't have much money, a newborn can really put a dent in the wallet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I do. I have been on paternity leave the past five weeks, but will be back to work in one more week.

Just saying hi, and search for build party threads here, you should get a wealth of info.

You do know that legally you can't build HIM a gun from a flat right? He can build one, and you can build one. But you can't build him one.

I'm sure you knew that, right?

I see "build" tossed around here too easily. People "building" ARs with thier store-bought DROS'ed lower... Or "building" thier AK on an NDS receiver. I'm sure this is just one of those cases.

I'm sure that's the case, but since he said this..............................

I made a bend fixture and bent the first receiver flat.
I felt it needed to be clarified. Not my rear in a sling.

It may still be OK since, it seems he has only bent one as of yet. The one you have bent will belong to the OP. The other one must be at least bent by the recipient. You may only assist.

That's what I meant to say. After I get the procedure down, I will assist him in assembling his own.

I was hoping someone on here could assist me in building mine so I learn the correct way, and what to look for. It is one thing to read about how someone else did it, and a completely different thing to have someone there helping you do it.

Not sure in what area you are in, but there are builds that happen quite often in the bay area. Use quality materials. AK builder seems to be the approved stuff.

Things I've learned to watch for are, receiver squareness, top rail straightness, lower rails flat against the receiver sides, and rear trunnion rivet sinking. These seem to be the issues I have had. Pay close attention to detail, and your receiver should work well. If you don't, well I had one that didn't.

WN, i'm in lakeside. i've got a press but no riveting gear. i do have a spotwelder. pm me for details. i'm dealing with some health issues so my time is erratic. and you fixed that for yourself, you're "helping" him on his build. otherwise you need all those pesky manufacturing licenses and such.
                              BTW-have a jig also.
