SoCal 80% and more Build Party - Laguna Hills, Orange County!!!

We're Having a Build Party! (or knitting circle, I like to call this). My significant other lovingly got me a bunch of parts to build an AR, and now it’s on to an 80% build!

Location: OC Armory, 23012 Del Lago, Suite B, Laguna Hills, CA 92653, Phone (949) 768-5189 http://www.ocarmory.com/
    Directions: http://tinyurl.com/Buildparty
Date: Sunday, June 14th, 2009 - Start Time tentative the earlier the better till we pass out.

We spoke with Mike from OC Armory and got him to agree to open up his doors and let us work in his back warehouse. Mike’s brothers and family have been top notch to work with and this is great news! (Disclaimer, we are not affiliated with OC Armory in any way other than as customers).

While no drills, presses, mills, jigs, or other items are in place yet, I will edit this thread to ensure that those who commit equipment are listed as such. Parkerizing / anodizing / sandblasting and duracoating people, feel free to chime in. We're still looking at what Jigs to use that everyone would agree to and are either most economical or best use.

Also, not committed yet, but not too terribly far from OC Armory is a CNC setup that Mike may be able to get us access to. To be clear, each person would be responsible for depositing their 80% lower into the CNC setup, pressing the button on their own 80% build, and...voila! We're in the process of obtaining additional information - please be patient and help, don't threadcrap. To clarify, the CNC setup we're talking about is not affiliated with Mike or OC Armory - we would be borrowing, renting time on the setup, or having a day "learning" how to use the CNC device. All legalities will be observed.

    Asks:

    • Commit to participate. Post “I’m In”, and I’ll follow up with you. PM me your phone number, or PM me and I’ll provide you with mine. For those of you stealthy folk who love your privacy and don’t want to advertise your participation, PM me anyway and I’ll list you as anonymous. Let’s keep the flaking to a minimum. Nothing sucks more than 100 commits and 98 no shows. Even if you’re not buying a lower but want to come and hang out anyway, please confirm with me so I have an idea as to how many people will show up.
    • Be utterly respectful of the venue. I cannot emphasize this enough. Mike is letting us use his space – sponsor his business and treat it as well as or better than your own place
    • Help with equipment, etc. If you are committing to ponying up gear, send me a PM or list it here, and I will keep the list up top. No one is making money on this, so this will only be a success if YOU help.
    • Have your stuff in order. Either order a yellowlogic billet in advance, hold your breath a day or two until Mike can work out a group purchase. All those who already have your 80% lower are totally welcome.

80% lowers to be purchased (please have these delivered to you in advance so you can play with us!):
    Yellow Logic:

Also, Mike may be able to get us a group buy on a different lower as well.
If you have your own 80% lower already, you're welcome to join us. More updates on the OC Armory Group Buy will take place as I get more information.

We will start a list of people and their status of commitment and whether they already have a lower. I will also set up a separate list of people who are bringing in equipment, items, etc.

If you have not finished building your AR-15, this may be a good place to exchange ideas, and learn from others.

I’m a girl, and I will be inviting some of my girlfriends to show up. Feel free to invite your ladyfriends along – who knows? Maybe I will not be the only girl duracoating her own AR in pink!

As I’m a woman and change my mind often, I asked Mike to make sure he had extra stuff on hand to help support our builds – so chances are he will have plenty of parts in hand in case anyone gets creative on their build.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

We also want to give credit to WCNones. WCNones started a couple of great threads on an 80% build to be hosted - enough people didn't seem to commit, and a site didn't seem to be chosen. For reference, here are the threads:

Electrical is going to be a huge issue. Also bringing in the equipment as Randall showed/stated is also a big one. If we do end up getting access to the CNC it would be a whole lot easier to have a place to go rather than bringing in equipment and setting up power.

We just spoke to Mike (not like Saturdays are busy days for them anyway ) and he mentioned he spoke to the chaps with the CNC machine - as soon as they can get an 80% lower so they can see what the CNC setup would be like, we may get a commitment. Woo hoo!

Machinery moving usually runs $100 an hour for the truck, forklift and 2 guys.
Figure on 2-3 hours for each move, PLUS driving time.

Quick question, based on the amount of equipment, how many people could expect to attend and complete a lower?

There is only standard electrical available. I discussed it with our CNC shop. If I can get the Auto shop I work at I can have a little more floor space available and 3 phase electrical. I really think the CNC shop is the way to go. We just have to figure out how many machines we will need to run and how long each stage will take. I just heard about this yesterday so give me a little time to work on it.

I can get a portable 20 kw gen,... plenty of 230/110v juice for the machines and extremely quiet.

I am going to this if I can get my reciever in by this time. Does it have to be the group by recevier or any AR 80% receiver? I found one that $149.

One more thing, since you guys have a milling machine there--can I bring a 1911 frame? Thank you!

                            Interested in the cheaper 80%.
I should be able to attend as long as the date is not moved earlier. I don't have any tools.
                            I'm in.

Hey guys! to remind, OC Armory is hosting the event at our request, but there were no requirements to buy anything specific from them, lowers included. As mentioned in the original post, bring your 80% if you already have it or ordered it elsewhere....

Also - A number of people had originally committed to bringing tools and equipment. That may or may not be required depending on whether or not Mike can obtain CNC equipment for the buildout of the 80% lowers. Having CNC means we would not need a milling machine, I believe. Stay tuned!
                              On hold....
