How to prevent rust

There are a lot of oil products which should all work well if applied routinely.
I use automatic trans fluid, as I have a few quarts left over from a leaky car.
For long term storage, wax based products work really well--BoeShield T9, CorrosionX, etc. They may thicken up after a while and require lubrication before you use the gun. I had a museum conservator tell me that they use Johnsons paste floor wax.

Actually given the choice between rusty guns and living next to a beach ....... personally , I'd move

I had a rifle I bought get surface rust at a gun shop in Oceanside. The shop said "this happens all the time." I was freaking furious. It was fresh rust. I can't even hardly look at that gun anymore...

Take some gun oil with steel wool and lightly rub in, in a circular motion. Should remove surface rust easily Apply oil to gun first

I live 5 mins from two marinas i mean i could literally walk 5 mins and im at a canal that connects to rio vista.
Never had a issue with rust but again humiditydictates that.


Silicon rag, wipe down the guns in question.
Ive read white silicon grease displaces humidity and moisture from surfaces coated in it.
Ive also read a froglube treated firearm prevents rust.
Bore socks work, stopped using them though.
Lastly move.

There are cheap plasic storage bags for guns, soak them in oil and zip them closed.

Or, enjoy the rust like I do, it's part of beach living. I don't age here, I rust.

Never ever put anything you don't want to rust in a plastic bag.

There is no faster way to lock in moisture and develop rust overnight.

I was shooting trap once with a friend who just bought his first gun , a Moss 500 from K-mart.
There was a very faint drizzle in the air that day and he put his gun away in a foam lined case he just got ........ 2 days later I get a phone call and he is saying his gun was rusted ............... he had left it in the case after we were shooting.
I told him to bring it over and we would clean it up , I figured it had some rust here and there.
WOW , that thing looked like he just got it out of the ocean ...... it was totally rusted ..... never seen anything like it ....... only took 2 days.
He says to me once I tell him I can't help that he is returning it to Kmart .....
I tell him Kmart won't want it back......
Kmart DID refund him ......... Unbelievable!
I told him he was lucky as a shop would have told him to pound sand .... I can not believe how fast it rusted and that Kmart gave him his money back ...WOW.

For long term storage, I wipe my shooting irons down with some nice oil then vacuum seal them, it works great and you don't have to check on them ever as long as they seal holds.

RIG is about he best! I used to live close to the beach. I used RIG on my guns then and 50 years later I'm still using it. I've never had problems with rust on any of my guns.

All right you want gun oil??

Go buy 3 in 1 regular household general purpose oil. the Red white and black bottle. not the new synthetic stuff.

3 in 1 is a good light turbine oil with antioxidants added to it and a little citronella oil for scent.

All you need a for a gun oil is a good Hydraulic oil or turbine oil, (nearly the same stuff in most cases) You don't need to pay $5 per oz
ATF dextron is great too. full of detergents and antioxidants.
and what $6 a quart give or take..

As for a spray. LPS 2, triflow, ZEPreserve or Zep 45. WD40 is great for wiping down guns daily or while at the range but no good for long term storage. the stuff evaporates and leaves nothing behind. LPS 2 is a rust inhibitor but is $14 a can,
Again a few drops of 3 in1 on a rag and wipe the gun down and you're good.

Store in a breathable case preferably foam free, I keep all my guns in duck canvas cases then stored in the safe. no issues with rust ever, but cases must be kept dry and you must think about what you are doing when out with your guns, if is wet out, foggy, whatever you need to dry your case, you can oil the crap out of the gun place it inside to get home. but as soon as you get home you need to pull the gun out of the case wipe the gun down again and dry the case.

the other issue is major temperature swings that can cause condensation.
Pay attention to where you are and what the temp is. don't bring a gun in from a cold environment to a warm one, it will condensate and rust.
