    How to prevent rust

I have a few older pistols and rifles. They are all generally in good shape, no rust. I live about a block from the beach, so rust is everywhere. What is the best way to prevent rust from my guns. they are all kept in a room, a fan continually going. A dehumidifier going 24/7. The dehumidifier removes about 24 ounces of water/week.
This may sound silly but I really dont like the idea of trying to remove rust from my great guns.

Are they in a safe? If so, get a safe heater or desiccant.

Do not store your guns in a foam lined box or case.
Every couple of weeks, oil them.
      These work great.

This is what I use, but then again I don't live by the beach so I don't have to worry about moisture like that. I do however use it for both cleaning and lubing both pistols and rifles with no problems. Give it a shot, it may help??

I do not have experience storing guns near a beach but in addition to everything mentioned here , I like bore butter... "found in the muzzle loader section"..... to coat the metal inside and out on stored guns , does not run nor evaporate like oils and leaves a film which is all good

A rather famous gunsmith and dear friend taught me this:

To protect from rust (after cleaning) I apply RIG generously on items i'm not going to be using or handling often. I rely on Barricade spray for most everything else. In addition to a golden rod.

Thankfully none of my components have developed any evidence of rust in many years.

Sentry Solutions Tuff cloth works good on external rust prevention. I like the Tuff cloth Marine version. I also have a desiccant container in the safe. One of my safes is in my prefab shop near the Sac. River. I will have dew like moisture on tools left out but so far no rust problems on my guns.

I had a rifle I bought get surface rust at a gun shop in Oceanside. The shop said "this happens all the time." I was freaking furious. It was fresh rust. I can't even hardly look at that gun anymore...

bore stores ...ALL my guns have them.

some thin gun socks are worthless

I've always lived near the beach,

guns come out every few weeks to every few months, cleaned after shooting, wiped down and placed back in storage. no issues with rust.

I use bore socks religiously. I also use WD40 "specialist" Corrosion Inhibitor. That is some good stuff, though it does stink to high heaven.

I also live 2 blocks from the beach with constant 50-80% humidity. I keep my 1961 Colt Python rubbed with RenWax in a ZCorr vacuum bag then inside a Borestore sock just because of the extra padding it provides, in Sturdy Safe that is caulked almost air tight running 2 Golden Rods and Silica gel mini dehumidifier that is plug in rechargeable. I have had it in there for 6 yrs, and only check every 3 years for any signs of rust and nothing so far; oxygen and moisture is the enemy.

Paranoia about rust is the best rust inhibitor.

There are cheap plasic storage bags for guns, soak them in oil and zip them closed.

Or, enjoy the rust like I do, it's part of beach living. I don't age here, I rust.
