Here are some pictures on how the plug sits. I did the recoil spring test you suggested and it looks like you were right. The spring does unwind a bit and well the spring doesn't compress evenly. So I ordered that spring and rod I posted above.

Yes it looks like the spring is coil binding, pushing outwards as a result, so then the plug is hitting the displaced coils.
