    1911 grip bushing

O k , I striped the bushing [ maybe screw ] - I got a new grip handle that will / allows a laser to be mounted under barrel . [ this one has a snap on /off switch instead of the pressure one
My question is - what is an over sized bushing ?
Would you know what the tap / die size is ? I have a thread gauge - but it's Xmas and now buried behind the Xmas animals / light boxes
If the tapped hole in frame is striped , can I just super glue in the bushing ?
If it matters , it is on my 80's series 1911 . I have a bunch of nephews and nieces that borrow several pistols and the change the grips from pachmayr - pearce - hogue and the one with a laser built in [ I don't like that one ]
I showed 2 of my nephews how to custom make a set of grips out of wood - from there they went to rubber , plastic and 4 or 5 kinds of wood .

Both the grip screw and the bushing into the frame are oddball threads. You won't have them in any standard tap and die set. Taps are available from Brownells. Look for for 1911 grip screw tap and 1911 bushing tap.

Unless you stripped the actual busing into the frame, simplest thing is to just replace the bushings. Brownells part # STOCK BUSHINGS, PER 1 SET OF 4
080-568-004WB To do it right they should be staked with a staking tool, though often non-gunsmiths do not stake them.

The oversized bushing and tap are right here http://www.brownells.com/handgun-par...p-prod621.aspx

It is .255-60. Just buy the matched set (bushing + tap)

You can always sell the tap for $20 on ebay if you only plan to use it one time. But it sounds like you need this tap in your toolbag, so maybe hang on to it. Because the bushings are only a few bucks each when you need more.

Use a very small dab of blue loctite to keep these from coming out during grip swaps, or you could stake them in if you are hardcore.

Thank you . By staking , do you mean center punching between the bushing and frame ? Is their something else to use ?
I have often used nail polish on exposed threads .
I already order both the over size and standard bushings [ 4 of each ] I generally buy them at the gun shows . I will go to Brownells and check on taps NOW

This is a staking tool for the grip bushings http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-to...-696-2869.aspx

Also be sure and ligthly oil your grip screw threads so they don't get fused with the bushings.

Neither say what size they or what the normal size is . Since I already ordered both screws and bushings [ normal and over size ] I will wait till I can get at my taps and dies [ the 3 kings come on the 6th of January - so all that stuff will be put away and I can get back to using garage . ]
From what it looks like , the stacking tool is just an expander - a good counter sink might work .

It is .255-60. Just buy the matched set (bushing + tap) - is this the tap size ?
If so , is / could this be a metic thread ?
              I know I have .250 X 20 , .250 X 28 and .250 X 32 [ 1/4-20 , 24 , 28 ] and a couple of 6 mm taps[ course and fine [ standard and SAE or what ever they call their threads ]
Not really sure what the 1/4 inch pipe thread is but I have both the tapered and straight thread [ the straight thread is for electrical - larger sizes common , like on the flood lights , porch lights that mount on boxes or smaller ones that go to lamps . ]

                .255-60 - I looked up . It is 6.5 mm X 60 threads per inch .
When new standard and over size bushings come - I will mic them both .
I will also check with thread gauge . I hope this helps others , pretty sure I am not only one . One of my nephews is / has my 1911 book and said maybe tomorrow he will bring back .
                Thanks again

Their minimum order is 25 + shipping so I could get tap and die nut for both but need other size . [ standard bushing size and thread ]

Standard Bushings are .236"-60. Use 7⁄32" tap drill for bushing.

Grip Screws themselves are .150"-50 x .250" tpi

                      Than you .
So a standard bushing is .236"-60 this is the grip screw , not outside bushing thread ?
Would you know what tap size is for a standard grip bushing ?

Thank you , while I have that magazine , I never saw that info .
I ordered the bushings . They came but between the Flu , Christmas and new years - they are just sitting here . I found the tap

And can probably use either crocus cloth or may 600 grit emery cloth to reduce size .
