This whole endeavor has been attempted before trying to get M1A mags to work with a Remington 700. Lets just say it didn't go very far without major issues. They only way you will reliable and safely get a 700 to feed from a double stack mag is look at the AW mags from AICS. This still requires receiver mods but much easier to accomplish. Ask me how I know

Which is not a Remington 700 like the OP asked about.
His mags also work in an LR308.
Perhaps you could make that recommendation too...

Nothing funny about it. Mossberg receiver and bolt are a totally different design then a Remington.

Even if you could figure out how to get your 700 action to sit over the top of part of your old receiver after you hack 75% of it away, the 700 receiver will not feed from LR308 magazines without you hacking a bunch of the bottom of the receiver away as well, permanently weakening the 700 receiver.

Me and my neighbor were discussing this very good point. The mags are too large and would not be close enough to strip the round so I would have to cut a ton out of the receiver. I wouldn't dare butcher my action that would be nuts. Although I still might consider machining my own complete unit from scratch, I'm going to have to complete a couple projects before I start though. The price of the krg makes it hard to justify the time though.

just remember they were doing single stack mags in 1888, My 1891 Argentine Mauser. has a detachable single stack.

they did it for a reason. it made feeding easy.
