    Rem 700 chassis thoughts.........

Ok I am one of those people with project ADD, I would assume many of us here are and have similar issues. That being said I was sitting here looking through a bunch of my extra parts. I have an 80% .308 lower that I will likely never use because I already have a completed rifle I like. I have a mill lathe and tooling and just enough knowledge to mess up a bunch of good parts.

Here's where I got to thinking.....

Could it be possible to make a chassis for my 700 that would accept the LR308 mags? Now I haven't pulled everything out yet to look at it and compare but I'm guessing somebody here knows why it wouldn't work and could save me the trouble. So guys in the know...... or curious minded guys with a thought about it, let's here why it might work or why it flat out won't work. One thing that comes to mind is the buffer tube orientation to the the bolt of the action interference but I think I could figure out a solution to that one. Let's focus on magwell and trigger orientation. Unless something else major comes to mind. Or just flat out tell me I'm nuts and stop thinking about it.

Don't worry I can take it, either flame on or get fired up and let's make some chips........

theres not enough material on the lower the straddle the receiver, not enough material to land the action screws. and any modification would be a cluster of parts waiting to fail.

That said it would not be to difficult to machine a chassis from a solid bar of aluminum. It's just time consuming.

I think you'd be annoyed by how far off the ground the rifle would have to sit with that giant mag sticking out the bottom. Stick with these: https://www.magpul.com/products/pmag-10-762-ac

I was up early this morning looking at it and you guys are right. It would be a cluster $&&@ lol. Some times my thoughts run away a little too far. I guess if it was doable somebody would have probably already done it.

Thanks for the replies. And yeah it would be pretty time consuming to make one from scratch I had been thinking of doing just that when this crazy idea popped into my head.

Can I fit this is my standard houge stock? Or do you have to buy the magpul stock?

I've handled them personally, very well made. Shows what can be done when you're not trying to keep a reputation alive with high prices.

Not fancy but might be serviceable. I do like the idea for a hunting rifle. I suspect that a conversion using magazines for a semi auto may not feed smoothly in a bolt action.

A few years ago I had a customer bring in a Rem 700 converted to 20rnd M1A magazines. Added a custom screw-in lug for the front tab to lock in and customized the front of the trigger area to accept a paddle release. Was REALLY cool and trick. I took pictures of it. I'll see if I can dig them out.

Found a pic of it on my Instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/xpqiFmGt...oustingcustoms

So it was a custom job. D&T'ed the front lug for the new stock screws. Rear stock screw was the same. Was really cool to see. I didn't do the work unfortunately.

If you have a mill, lathe, and tooling, make your own. Just to make your own.

Start by making the action fit into a block, then machine everything out from the block.

Even if you could figure out how to get your 700 action to sit over the top of part of your old receiver after you hack 75% of it away, the 700 receiver will not feed from LR308 magazines without you hacking a bunch of the bottom of the receiver away as well, permanently weakening the 700 receiver.

This whole endeavor has been attempted before trying to get M1A mags to work with a Remington 700. Lets just say it didn't go very far without major issues. They only way you will reliable and safely get a 700 to feed from a double stack mag is look at the AW mags from AICS. This still requires receiver mods but much easier to accomplish. Ask me how I know
