    DuraCoat Airbrush problem

I tried to DuraCoat my 870 today, but the cheap Harbor Freight airbrush supplied by LCW won't spray anything. I've tried adjusting everything I can adjust, with no luck. Now I've got an 870 hanging in pieces in my garage, mixed DuraCoat with a 6 hour shelf life, and no way to apply the stuff. Hopefully LCW will be cool and replace the whole kit.

Did anyone have similar problems with the airbrush LCW sells? How did you fix it?

did you try to increase pressure?

Im not surprised by anything from HF. They should be able to exchange it.

If you're not getting any air, try backing the brass adjustment screw on the canned air adapter by a few threads.

If you're getting air, but no Duracoat, try unscrewing the metal nozzle that connects to the siphon tube by a few threads. If you're still not getting duracoat, but air is coming out, make sure the nozzle isn't clogged by pushing a sewing needle through it.

In rare cases the Duracoat needs to be thinned to get it to spray. If all else fails, and you have air coming out, but no Duracoat, try thinning the mix with a little bit of the Duracoat Reducer.

I tried ALL of that with no luck. I'm thinking it's got to be a bad airbrush.

I called LCW this morning and they immediately offered to reship all new components, including more DuraCoat. I was very happy with their customer service.

People have been thrilled with DuraCoat, but I'll never DIY again. What a waste of time and money. Sailors came over to ask me not to curse so much. Trying to apply that stuff could turn Gandhi into a homicidal maniac. I adjusted every variable under the sun, and never did have any luck in any way. Finally, I sent my gun off to get professionally hot-blued, and it actually cost less money than the air brush and DuraCoat components. Heh.

Normally Duracoat is easy to spray, once you figure out to shoot really thin coats with very little or no thinner.

What is a really good airbrush I should get to use with Duracoat?

iwata makes really nice airbrushes. I have an eclipse, but the hopper is a little small for doing large parts. One of these would be great.

always test your air brush prior to mixing your paint/ coating. Take some acetone and run through the gun, make sure everything is working properly. And remember, a clean airbrush is a happy airbrush. If you plan on using it more than once, clean clean clean. Take the whole damn thing apart when you are done, soak it in acetone, if you have a sonic cleaner thing those work great too. Take the needle, the "trigger" all of the pneu's, put a small amount of lube on any moving parts, oil from your nose/ forehead is plenty enough for most parts.

if your doing a large quantity at once i could see mixing up a large enough batch to use a full size gun, but for home stuff an airbrush with a large hopper should be plenty.

at most i couldn't see going much larger than a jamb gun.

                          OP,

Kit brushes suck....You may want to add reducer...Sometimes if you add too much hardener (well not too much, just too much for the cheap kit) its too much for the HF to handle...If you don't plan on DCing again that and other airbrushes should do...Otherwise DC is hell on an airbrush..
