How do I add a front sight base?

I have a mosin nagant I chopped to 16 1/2 inches. I have the rest of the barrel and the front sight base... I was thinking if cutting the front sight off of the barrel, reshaping the bottom so it fits the contour of the barrel at 16 inces, and then attach it somehow... Heres the thing, I dont know if i can tac weld it on, or silver solder it, or what. I am wondering if you guys have any suggestions.

Soldering it on would probably be your best choice. Don't weld it. You can drill and tap the barrel but I wouldn't do that if I were you. You can only drill so far.

Brownells has some solder that should fit the ticket, I hope... Guess I'll try this route and if it doesn't work. Oh well, just $10
