Squad three. When I pre registered last night only two squads had open spots so I tossed a coin and picked one.

Are the matches always this full?

They usually limit the number of people per squad to a smaller number. This being a Toys for Tots shoot, they probably are letting it get a little bigger. Since you're new, just let the squad know and you'll get more help than you probably want.

I noticed it was a toys for tots. Do I bring a new toy for a child or do they want cash donations instead

According to their facebook page, it's $10, if you bring a new toy for a child. It's normally $25 for non-members and $20 for members. I would assume, anything past the $10 would be for the charity. I could be wrong though.

you'll have a blast I went and watched a match last spring and had every intent of becoming a regular attendee. Life kinda got in the way. Everyone was super nice and was constantly offering me a setup to shoot a section.

Competition shooting will get you killed in the streets

3 deployments and I'm still alive. There's a reason why there is a USPSA club on Fort Bragg and the match is made up of all SF/Ranger shooters. They know what many tactibillies don't and that's competition shooting serves as an outstanding training tool for promoting firearms proficiency. The stress (albeit self imposed) does matter and does improve the ability to handle dynamic movement in a stressed environment as well as a manner to be assessed against your peers both for accuracy and efficiency.

That said, no one said it was meant for training. It's a game. Get over it.

Nothing will "get you killed in the streets" except doing the wrong thing at the wrong time ... or doing the right thing at the wrong time, or the wrong thing at the right time.

IF the "right thing" happens to be drawing and shooting your gun, competition can/will help with that skill.

IF drawing/shooting your gun isn't the right thing to do, competition doesn't help you learn whether or not that's the case.

IF drawing/shooting is the right thing to do, but it's the wrong time, competition won't help you much with that decision either.

Competition sure does help you learn to work the gun though, and that really can't be a bad thing. You can learn it other ways as well.

If your concern is self-defense training/practice, competition is a good part (but not the only part) of gaining a complete skill set. It's one of the least expensive ways to get trigger time doing something besides standing there and shooting.
