Need help in getting started with .22 rifle competition

I would like to get some ideas of how to get started in .22 rifle competition. Long distance, Tactical etc...
Also equipment used, what type of rifle and ammo would you recommend and all that good stuff.

I live North county San Diego and would like to join a local club as well.

    Thanks for the input

I can only write from my perspective.

I'm interested in Tactical and 3-gun matches. For 3-gun I need a semi-auto rifle that can also double as a very accurate tactical rifle.

So I've decided to buy a Spike's tactical 22lr upper (http://spikestactical.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=26) with a Lothar Walther barrel, which hasn't come out yet, but I heard it will soon. I'm hoping that it's capable of shooting in the .3 at 50 yards. (Which is very good considering an Anshutz will shoot around .25 at 50 yards)

I've also heard great things about Accuracy Speaks upper (http://www.accuracyspeaks.com/public_html/22lrar15.htm
). But they're almost twice the cost of a Spike's.

I'm going to have Spike put a free float tube without sights. This way, I can add a scope (long range scope and close range scope) and flip-up sights (whenever I feel like practicing with iron sights). With this combination I can use it for tactical, 3-gun, or position shooting. Pretty much one rifle for just about everything.

Here's an article written by a fellow board member...
Tactical Rimfire 22LR Precision Shooting. New match offers fun, accuracy, affordable ammo. Savage, Anschutz, Marlin and Sako rifles. 6mmBR.com and Accurateshooter.com is best guide for 6mm and 6.5mm Benchrest precision shooting. See 6BR FAQ, Reloading Data, Photos, Video. Lot's of good information here.

You can go bolt action or semi auto. A Ruger 10/22 is a nice start. You can buy one of their target models for around $400 and add a bipod and nice scope on it and you're set. Check out the California Precision Rifle section here, alot of info in what you are looking for.

I just shot my first precision 22 match last weekend.
            Here is the thread:

Best bet is to just show up and look at everyone's rifles.
We can answer the important "why" questions.

I shot it with a 10-22 that I worked over extensively.
I liked the challenge of building up my 10-22, but it's easier to get good accuracy/reliability with a bolt and I did it with a semi-auto.

It would have probably been cheaper to just buy the heavy barreled savage that a bunch of the guys shoot including Pascal, the author of that first 6mmBR article.
There will be another 6mm BR article too as there was a guy from that site out last weekend taking more pictures for the next article.
Plan on shooting ammo that's $5 or more per 50rd box.

Wolf Match Target, SK Standard Plus (both are the same ammo made by lapua, but in different boxes)
Eley easily goes up to about $10 a box of 50.

Eley Match or target keeps on comming up on all the information I am finding on the internet... must be very good stuff!

This after noon I visited my local Guns store in the Temecula/Murrieta valley and one of the nice sales person recomended me the Marlin 981T bolt action .22 S/L/LR with the 17 rounds tube magazine. He said that this rifle is very acurate, 22" with Micro-Groove rifling with 16 grooves and inexpensive priced around $250.

Any comments on the Marlin 981T

don't discount the Fiocchi biathalon or super biathalon ammo.. lots of the guys use it for the 200yds prone 22lr prone matches.

What scopes, sizes, are you guys using for your .22 match rifles? I have a Leupold 3x9 by 40mm Rifleman scope mounted on mine but been thinking of something different with a mildot reticle.

I really like the Nikon Buckmasters 4-14 Mil-dot side-focus that I have on my rifle.
It will not focus back to 25yds on 14x, but that can be olved by simply turning down the power a bit.

I'm using a Bushnell 3200 X10 mildot(really helps with hold over at different distances) and it works well. Solid and good quality for the price.
