    Cheap basic ipsc gears setup?

I'm looking to get started doing ipsc shooting and I'll be using a M&P 9mm 5" Pro pistol. What is the most economical and basic gears setup I can get by for the production division? I found an ipsc belt on Amazon for about $30 but those single magazine pouch cost $20+ EACH and if I want 4 of those on my belt that's $80+ already....

    For affordable, check out Botach.com

I bought a blackhawk holster and 2 mag combo from them a while back for like $35. They still might have the deal.

Edit: my stuff is totally ghetto but I don't really care. It's affordable and it works.

Well, first of all, you are not going to shoot IPSC, you are going to shoot USPSA. This is the US, not the rest of the world,,, And yea, you have to spend some $$$ to play. Go to USPSA.com and read the rules.

Sorry to offend you by using the wrong terminology! Since the forum says "Competition, Three gun, IPSC, IDPA , and Training discussion here." I assumed it's ok to use the term IPSC here....And sorry for posting the dumb newbie question too. I just don't want to waste TOO MUCH unnecessary $$$ to play.

Just save up a little and get decent/good gear from the get go because you'll end up buying something better later on. Buy once...cry once.

You can show up and run with a basic holster and mag pouches.
You'll be at a disadvantage at first, but you'll be able to see what the guys are running and what works...and talk to them.
Better than relying on guys who may or may not know, but try to sound like they do.

              WayneT,

              Try www.holsters.com (Safariland retail site)

You will find the 5197 for your M&P priced about $34. If you don't find what you are looking for, just call them.. Pretty knowledgable.

Pouches also there for about $20+ .. It's worth it since they literally will last a lifetime..

CPWSA is good for competition specific gear. Call Chris Patty the owner and he can give you solid advice on what a good setup to start with would be for your pistol. The M&P is best suited in USPSA Production Division and that's a pretty good division to start in anyway.

The one thing to think about is whether you will stick with the M&P once you get a taste of competition. If you gear up for it now, then decide to go to something else like a Glock 34 (the dominant pistol in this division nowadays), then you need a new holster and mag pouches.

Also note that in Production Division you are limited to 10 rounds loaded in a magazine even if they can hold more. This means you need no less than 6 and more like 8 magazines for your pistol to ensure you will make it through long field course stages without running dry.

The problem with starting with cheap basic holster and pouches is they mostly fit belts poorly, typically have lousy retention and in the long run don't serve you for very long anyway. So you might as well buy the good stuff right from the start no matter what gun you use.

I started with a SIG P226 and bought a full top grade rig right away, then went to a Glock 6 months later for the competitive edge it provided and I was happy to buy new holster and pouches. I still have and use the SIG stuff anyway, so no loss really because good stuff is timeless stuff.

The present majority holster of choice in Production is the Blade Tech Black Ice DOH model. You cannot go wrong with the CR Speed inner/outer belt system. Pouches have several good options, with the Blade Tech ones being a good choice. Chris Patty (CPWSA) also has some really nice mag pouches that take up less belt real estate than the Blade Tech ones and I liked the look of them a lot (I forget the brand). Several friends got them from him and they are very pleased.

                Welcome to the sport.

BTW, lookup your local clubs at the USPSA website using their Club Finder utility and go to a match and watch and check things out before you jump into all your gear. http://www.uspsa.org/locate-uspsa-clubs.php

You can learn a whole lot by watching and asking questions, shooters love to talk about their gear LOL

BTW, BTW, here is a link to all the USPSA competition rules in PDF form - http://www.uspsa.org/uspsa-rules.php

Terminology is important, you don't want him calling magazines clips? That's what Da Google is for... to find stuff out you don't already know. Besides if he decides to shoot IPDA, then a little thicker skin is needed to put up with their Tactical Plumber Range Nazis.

After you find the matches nearest to you, then show up and tell the match director you are new and interested.

                    Here what it looks like

Uncle mike's is good for low price, and is what I started with.

Uncle Mike's double mag pouch should be close to 20. Two of these for 40-45 dineros, and you have 4 mag-capacity. An extra one can go in your pocket, so it is easy to start with 5 mags at a match. I also use their kydex holster for my glock. Also 20-25. They should have one that fits M&P (check their website for appropriate size number). You can get away with an uncle miike's instructor's belt (no inside velcro belt, just standard pull through) for around 25.

                      All on amazon!

Good luck and welcome to the sport, USPSA or IPSC!

I have the standard Blade-Tech holster (http://shop.blade-tech.com/owb-holst...l#.UysUDfldV8E) with the drop-offset adapter for my M&P9 Pro and love it. Because you want to play in the Production division, you can also look at the Blade-Tech Revolution single mag pouches (http://shop.blade-tech.com/revolutio...940-p-229.html). Because the production division requires the mag holders to all be behind the hip bone, you are not going to need or want to have any cant to them and these are much cheaper than the ones that do offer adjustable cant. As for a belt, a CR Speed or Double Alpha inner/outer belt combo is a great way to go. These allow you to easily put on or take off your gear and keep your holster/mag pouches in the same place every time.

You can't tilt your mag holders in USPSA Production Division?

OP might want to consider spending the extra and get CR holders, they can be modified to hold different magazines with adapters. Safariland's are mag specific, but they are my favorites

Fixed. It's not that you aren't allowed to have any cant to your mag holders, but it's more that you don't want to. I like the Blade-Techs for a beginner/productions because they are much cheaper than the CR-speeds (which I actually use for my Limited rig).
