You could do either Single Stack (Minor) or Limited-10 (Minor). With 9mm you can't make Major Power Factor so your A,B/C,D hits will be scored 5,3,1 instead of the 5,4,2 you get with Major. Both divisions allow you to run 10 round magazines so it really is up to you. The big difference between the two is going to be equipment placement. With Limited-10 you can position your mag pouches and holster anywhere on your belt, but in Single Stack they must all be behind the hip bone. You also can't run "race"-type holsters in Single Stack. As far as the gun itself goes, with Single Stack you really aren't permitted to make many modifications to the weapon (externally) different than a factory gun, but in Limited-10 you can.

You shoot in divisions, not classes. So you would be shooting either Single Stack or Limited 10(minor) division and your classification would be unclassified. None of that matters, best thing for newbies is to jump in and start playing the game. Some clubs will require that you take a safety class before shooting a match and other clubs will let you start by placing you with experienced shooters.

8+1 is for Major PF. Minor PF is allowed 10+1 in SS. http://www.uspsa.org/document_librar...un%20Rules.pdf

Personally I would shoot that in limited 10 and put on a nice magwell and lighten the slide and trick out the gun some. Then get a nice CRspeed or AA holster and have fun

Lets just get the guy started first.... After he's got several matches under his belt, he will have decided equipment and division.

True but with limited 10 if he gets a race gun later or something else that can be used in it he will already have a classification.

Ok, but maybe Rob Leatham is his hero and he just wants to shoot the Single Stack classic...

If it were me I'd run it in single stack division as well. In fact, I've been wanting to get a 9mm 1911 just so I can see how well I shoot SS with minor v. major pf. I think it would be very difficult to be competitive shooting minor in SS, but I'm sure there are some that can do it. Regardless, decide on a division, gear up, and start competing!

If you only shoot double alphas then it will be easier since you got more shots in a mag. Many people have made master and gm in minor

In fact, Sevigny almost beat Leatham in 2013 when is loads didn't make major. He shot minor pf with a major pf setup! It's not impossible to be competitive, but there's a reason why most of the top SS shooters shoot major.

SS minor for sure over L10. At least in SS you will have a capacity advantage over those shooting major (10 vs 8). In L10 you will give up the points for shooting minor without any potentially offsetting advantage. Many pages of the internets have been consumed discussing shooting maj vs min in SS so I won't weigh in there.

I shoot a 1911 9mm in SS Minor. Been thinking of switching over to major actually. The two extra rounds in minor is nice, but the extra points I think are a bigger advantage.
