It's for fun. It probably will ruin any sd training you've done. NASCAR drivers are probably horrible in traffic.
It's true; it's a game. But it's also a good way to develop skills. Here's a post by Rob Leatham that may change your mind regarding the value of competition.

I recently ran a class of military shooters, and among other things, ran them through the IDPA classifier, Participated in a local steel match and shot The Arizona State IDPA Championships! Let me share with you some interesting observations. They get more wound up and nervous in a match than they do in combat! Why? Because they have time to think about it and get tense! I respect these guys opinion more than ANY so called tactician out there who is sure he knows the tricks to surviving an armed confrontation. These guys have been doing that a bunch lately and think IDPA and IPSC shooting both offer much to the testing phase of ones ability. On the other hand, they to a man do not agree with the philosophies that either is inherently more practical. All the little things like which way do you turn or where you do the load is all something that we can discuss all day on the range, but on the battlefield, men do things that may not be considered practical or tactical and live because they did it fast, accurately and decisively. On the other hand, there are those who did it "right" by some folks judgement and still lost. We all have our ideas of how it should be done, and the rules of the existing games are just that, some ones ideas. To say going to any kind of shooting event will teach you technique that will get you killed is idiotic and irresponsible. Guys, it is cool to have your own plan but do not try to pass it off as gospel to the rest of us. A discussion of technique and philosophy seldom ends with agreement, but that does not make the other guy wrong or stupid. These are just games designed to test your abilities in a very controlled and pre-planned arena. Who wins is your best shot, not your most likely survivor. That can not be tested under the clock. However, those that master executing under the timer are probably more likely to do well in a pressure situation, than someone who chokes, misses or gets procedural penalties. This is a point the boys all agree on, thus they train hard and test themselves in the arena of competition to see what they know and whether they can do it.

Yes, but you actually shot thru the match, by yourself, without a coach, and not just talked about something you have never done, unlike certain other posters....

I've heard that same voice behind me when I've been shooting some stages!

I don't pretend to be an "authority." I'm just a guy who trains a lot, shoots a lot and has a perspective.

I did a IDPA last month in Sac. You had to do a safety training class, which I did then shot at a comp the next day. Just did the fun run in Oakdale which is based under USPSA. I was gonna try the competition shooting yesterday but didnt get a chance to.

Been there, done that, got the Tshirt... you cant win and train right. Dudes drop nearly full mags because when they walked it and they calculated it out that was the best time. Then they just know there's a round chambered so they don't rack the slide. If you tell me shooting like that dosent have a negative affect on you in the long run...

There are bad guys everywhere. I shot to slide lock every mag.

I remember a guy let me shoot some of his reloads... I couldnt believe the gun cycled.. it must have barely been up to legal velocity. So the recoil was not even similar to any self defense caliber.

I'm not interested in driving an hour and paying to only shoot 250 rnds, Stand around a lot, deal with guys crying about technical crap and then know I have no chance at winning the game(however I still stayed in the meat of the curve even despite all this) Production class means take any part off any gun that company ever made to supe up your gun. Wide frame glock mag release on your 9mm? Good to go...

I can spend my time and money much more efficiently other ways and get more training for my money.

There's clearly a lot you don't understand about USPSA.

Yes, practicing and being a fast and accurate shooter has no bearing or use in real life...

As a matter of fact, all of the LEOs and people from the Armed Forces I've ever practiced or competed with all talk about how it will invalidate years of tactical training and make it more likely that they get injured or killed back in the real world. Skill and speed are just worthless when you have a job to do and most of them regret wasting a weekend at a match when they could have taken a Yeager class instead.

Don't tell me your using LEOs as an example of good shooters... your pullin my leg right?

Speed sucks if your standing in the open and dropping full mags every time you move. Oh you'll just magically forget the 10, 000 times you did that stuff and rise up to become a super duper gun fighter? Lol...

                            .
Absolutely not. LEOs are great shooters, which is why you see so few shooting IDPA and USPSA matches, they simply dont want to taint their skills.

                                Who drops full mags?

What if you are out in the open in a real scenario? If there's nowhere to hide, then accuracy and speed are pretty much all that matters.
