    First USPSA experience

    Awesome!
Did a class today with diablo action pistol at USI today and had a great time. Everyone without exception was professional, friendly, and generous with their time and energy. Will practice a bit before doing my first match but really looking forward to it.
    Any other newbies out there?

Fairly a newbie here. I also took the class at USI last March. I just went to one practice session and got to a USPSA match. My first few matches my goal was not to get DQ'ed.

Once you get comfortable, come by Richmond, they have USPSA sanctioned matches.

Kid's sports and staying married kind of make weekend schedule a tad tight.
Did practice yesterday (and as many Thursdays as I can) and plan on doing the October 13 match.

Not getting DQ'd = Good thing.

Really fun. I imagine it might dampen some of the fun of the regular range.

If I can ever find time to do so, I really want to get involved in competition of some kind. I appreciate threads like this, as it keeps the fires stoked!

I don't pretend to be an "authority." I'm just a guy who trains a lot, shoots a lot and has a perspective.

Find time? There is no find time. Complete or don't complete.
Now get yourself to a match, Jedi!

Just watch for cheaters. I'm not going to say what association it was but I caught guys all the time keeping their mouth shut when the scorer made errors in their favor etc.. even the PRESIDENT...

Oh and it gives you terrible training scars for anyone serious about self-defense.

I use to stand behind cover and take out all the targets at distance while everyone else ran by and shot them point blank. I never got first place but they all would be dead in the real world.

Not necessarily. If you run a match the way you'd hope to operate in a real incident, there's little chance of picking up anything but an opportunity for some decent organized practice.

It's probably true that people who compete-to-win every-dang'd-weekend for years with a tuned-up race gun, and then slip a J-frame in a pocket holster for self-defense aren't doing themselves any favors. That's a pretty small crowd, though.

C'mon, ZT, it's passed time for you come on out and shoot. I promise the game won't hurt your tactical skills.

Pauliedad, awesome for you kid! I have been playing these games for 45 years, and it never, ever, gets old. Sure, you might take a few weeks off here and there, but then there is the next major Area match, or the Nationals, or a big outlaw 3 gun, and you get all energized all over again.

Just keep in mind that a lot of folks who shoot tuned up race guns also shoot in divisions like production, single stack, limited/limited 10, and revo. Their skills aren't limited to open division.

Paulidad: glad you liked your experience! As Highlander51 said, it never gets old. Enjoy your new addiction!

You should play IDPA then. USPSA/IPSC is more like golf than "training". It's a GAME. At no time was anyone ever threatened by a spining Texas Star or a teetering Polish Plate Rack.

It's for fun. It probably will ruin any sd training you've done. NASCAR drivers are probably horrible in traffic.

OP, I'm in the same boat. I love it, but I'm so busy every weekend, I can't go out to play. I'm going to try some Cowboy games though, when I have the time.

Richmond is not as intimidating as I thought it would be. Super nice guys for the most part. There are some real serious folks too though. Just announce yourself as a newbie and you'll be fine. You'll learn a lot too! Everyone is willing to give advice to the newbies! (ex; Don't shoot your gun empty, it's costly to have to rack the slide on a reload, etc).

Practiced on Thursday and lots of advice was flowing. Been a while since I was a newbie. Really is fun. Will do all the practices I can before my first match in October.
