    Manually rack or slide release...?

During M9 qualifications I was "advised" to not manually rack the slide after mag changes.

The explanation was you can keep your sight picture.

However - I do not own just one semi-auto.

And all of them seem to have a different slide release control -

Under pressure I find I can manually rack without having to think about which sidearm I'm holding/how to release it.

    What say you...?

    Manually rack. Always.
Freedom in the USA is not the freedom from offense. It is actually the freedom to offend.

Honestly I think it's a bunch of pointless arguing over nothing. Do whatever works for you.

As for the rationale your adviser gave you, I've never seen anybody maintain sight picture through their reload. Sounds like a silly made-up reason to me.

It's really the way that you are comfortable with.

most shooting schools I attended, such as frontsight, suggests me rack slide every time performing a speed/emergency reload.

But personally I am very comfortable with slide release as my small hand size enables me reaching it without breaking the grip.

That would pretty much settle the issue for me.

Manual Rack, specifically an overhand powerstroke (that's what Travis Haley calls it.)

It's the same motion I use for a TAP-RACK drill.

Slide lock release brings the gun back in the fight faster. But in the end, go with what you are comfortable doing.

If you own a gun that auto feeds (Gold/Auto 5) load and go.. no need to rack or hit any buttons..

The slide release is definitely faster - IF you hit it the first time. Pretty easy to do on my Beretta, but nigh impossible to do on my M&P.

Racking is slower, but it works pretty much every time, on pretty much every gun. Unfortunately, it also activates the slide-mounted safety on my Beretta, pretty much every time.

So, I use the slide release on the Beretta, and I rack with the M&P.
