    Moving while shooting?

So I currently shoot trap competitively, and love it to death and I am interested in starting to shoot pistols, but I get horribly bored shooting at merely paper. What leagues are there where you are moving while shooting, or are shooting moving targets? And can juniors shoot in these leagues?

Google IDPA or IPSC. IDPA is my preference because it is more of a "stock gun" competition. IPSC, while it has its place are more "race guns" and not my cup of tea.

I like trap shooting as well, and was bored of pistol shooting for some time. I am not HOOKED on IDPA. They do have a junior section for IDPA. Courses of fire change every month and they are supposed to be "practical". Like retreating from danger and holding a baby bassinet while firing strong hand only and moving backwards).

Find your local organization and go check it out. Where are you located? I go to the Piru range in Ventura County. Great set of folks and love to welcome new shooters.

Oh, I see your sig. I shoot trap at Oaktree too! Piru is the place to go. A short drive down the 126. I can get there in 30 minutes door to door from Valencia.

check out http://www.isishootists.com/ and click on the Match Schedule. You can just go to watch if you want. They have a steel challenge range there too, but you don't move. Really improves your accuracy though.

Range fee is $25 and you will go through about 80-100 rounds of ammo total. So it isn't super expensive. The fun starts at 8:30am every Saturday. Check the schedule though.

Check for USPSA or IPSC clubs in your area. Like it was said above, "Google it".

The clubs have different classes for stock and modified guns along with classes for guns with 10 round or less magazines, single stack 1911s, etc. so just about any gun can be competitive.

Don't let that stop you. I hadn't shot a pistol in probably 3 years, never drew from a holster in my life until that morning and I was shooting a revolver. I just took it easy and tried to make accurate shots and I won my class the first time (not a lot of people on revolvers, but hey a wins a win). My reloads sucked (like 10 seconds) but there was nobody chuckling or making comments. Everyone was very supportive and encouraging. The range masters are really helpful. Go to YouTube and check out IDPA to see what it is like.

We would love to see you there- especially younger shooters. There are only a few of them that I have seen.

Ah, you're in Santa Clarita, also check out the Action Pistol match run by the Deadwood Boys, also at Piru:

I haven't shot the match personally but I am told they are a lot of fun. I believe they use a lot more steel, which is a blast. More fun than shooting paper in my opinion. The bays that they use have a lot of props and structures/facades on them which adds to the fun!

While cool, IDPA tends to have too low round count and too little movement for my taste. On the other hand, this does also make it a little better venue for newer shooters to get into competitive practical shooting.

Check out SWPL USPSA matches at Lopez Canyon too. I've seen junior shooters there. You will find plenty of race guns there, but remember they are scored in their own class so you won't be competing against them.

                Knight wo says ni,

great handle by the way!! there are two more clubs that havent been mentioned yet. in santa clarita out past a place to shoot is a private members only sportmans club that hosts IDPA matches called 1800 club, then there is another private club that hosts uspsc matches monthly as well, Gopher flats sportsman club. They shoot near Lake view terrace in the valley. PM me if you need or want details on these clubs. they shoot sundays so I dont make it much. if your looking for a saturday shoot you may have to drive a bit. I drive to prado shooting park for IDPA on the first and third saturdays.

Good luck! If you want to do some pistol training before you go to a club event, continue to dig around this topic, there are a lot of trainers that can get you up to speed incluing your s truly.

                Peace,

+1 to this - just show up at ISI on one of their two IDPA days each month (schedule is at www.isishootists.com) and tell them you are a new shooter, pay attention to the safety rules and go have fun. They run low key matches with a wide spectrum of abilities and everyone is welcome. If you are bored with slow-fire stationary targets, IDPA or USPSA/IPSC is the answer.

If you think trap shooting is excitng, you may not be able to handle moving and shooting.

Now that's funny....I shoot skeet and sportings clays and trap shooters are usually not a very talkative / excitable bunch.

I shoot there twice a month.

ipsc (which is uspsa here in the states) does have a production division, and single stack. Which are ( gear wise ) almost identical to stock service pistol, and
Enhanced service pistol. So to say that uspsa is more racy due to the gear is a bit unfair.
Uspsa stages tend to have higher round counts and most of the times there are less rules.
They are both allot of fun. Isi shoots a match every Saturday so check out both the idpa and the uspsa matches.
I will warn you that the isi guys lean more towards idpa.
But there good sports about uspsa and usualy setup some Fun stages.
I'll be there this Saturday shooting the steel challenge, and doing the idpa classifier (just got my card).
Let me know if you make it down, I would be glad to help you get started
