You can very easily practice mag changes at home using a shot timer set for a delay start PAR time.
Start with the hammer cocked on an unloaded gun with empty magazine inserted. Start timer, take position aimed at a mock target. When beeper goes off, tighten slack on trigger to simulate a shot, drop old mag and do a reload (to another empty mag) and then drop the hammer when you have regained sight picture on the mock target.
The goal is to get the after-reload shot off before the second beep from the timer (end of PAR time period). Once you are smoothly making the time you started with reduce the PAR time and keep working on it until you arrive at the timeframe you want to be able to do a shot-to-shot reload in.
Never dismount the rifle, just lean back a little and pull it into your shoulder as you hit the mag release to drop the old mag. Make sure your mags all drop free so you don't have to claw them out. Make sure your mag catch is setup properly to allow the mag to seat and click-in without having to tap the bottom. Get mag bumpers for all your mags (I like MagPul).
This can be done easily even with a club-stocked AR and castle-nut versions can be temporarily un-castrated for this form of practice
A good time to strive for is 2 seconds or less :-)Comment
