    Which 3 Gun Classification?

    New guy here.

What classification would a "CMP Service Rifle" type AR-15, with bullet button and 10/20 round mag. fall into for 3 Gun?

I live in L.A. and I think Piru would be the closest 3 Gun range.

    Thanks

They are called "Divisions". In USPSA, "classification" normally means what your skill level is - D, C, B, A, M(Master) and GM(Grandmaster).

Piru sort of uses USPSA rules.

So you can use your rifle in all Divisions other than Heavy Metal (were you would need a .308).

You can use your rifle in Tactical, Limited or Open.

But you would be most competitive in Limited.

But your other two guns also play into which division you can be in. If one of your other firearms have a feature that is only legal in Open, you can only shoot in Open.

Um, depends on a few things..

Does it have more than one optic or a bipod? If it does it falls under open.

Does it have a single optic with no bi-pod? Then it falls under Tactical Scoped or simple Tactical for USPSA

Does it have iron sights only and no bipod? Then it falls under tactical Iron or Limited for USPSA.

Mag capacity and ability to reload does not usually play into things.

Some clubs might have a ten round mag class, but mostly they don't.. I think the california 3-gun series had that class, but had few competitors so they dropped it.

But come to think of it I think Piru only runs Tactical and Open.

          Here's a 3-gun question.

If I'm shooting tactical class rifle and shotgun, can I use my limited handgun (standard sights, magwell, 140mm mags)?

Yes. In order to stay in Tactical you are required to shoot a Limited pistol.

If you used an Open pistol you would be forced into Open (even though your other two guns are legal in Tactical).

Nice, I wasn't sure about using the 140mm mag while in Tactical. Thanks.

AFAIK, you can shoot a revolver, production, SS, or L10 gun and still stay in Tactical.

                  yes

Now what class would I fall into as a novice (assume D?) and if I brought my stock S&W 1911SC (same as 1911pd) to compete with?

                    Yes.

                    Revolver... is Limited Legal

                    Production Pistol... is Limited Legal

                    SS... is Limited Legal

                    L-10... is Limited Legal

Since they are all limited legal you can shoot them and stay in Tactical.

You mentioned you lived close to Piru. Conveniently, there is a X3 3-gun match tomorrow, Sunday, 16 Aug. If you can, drop by to take a look and get a taste of how things work. You can see stage diagrams from previous matches on the website http://www.x3multigun.com. If you get there during sign up time, look for Sammy the Match Director and let him know you're spectating. FYI, you pass Wes Thompson's range, and just keep driving up the dirt road.

As posted by others above, most of the 3-gun matches around here do not have "skill classifications" like A, B, C, D, only equipment classes (tactical, open, limited, etc).

The gear you list puts you in tactical scope class. The X3 match does have challenging courses of fire (e.g. rifle out to 375 yards or so with ~10" steel targets), so if you only have a 1x red dot it will be a handicap. A single stack pistol also will slow you down (look at the round counts on the stage diagrams). The West End 3-gun match is a little more friendly for your kit as the rifle stages do not go out as far as X3. (http://www.wegc.org The next WEGC 3-gun match is next Saturday.

FYI, for action shooting matches you will be better served by running a "featureless" build than a bullet button build for your mag changes (especially with 10 round mags, with which you'll be reloading quite a bit).

Actually I'm no where near that. Probably the OP who was living closer. I am closer to Chabot.
