    Interested in Comp

Novice shooter and interested in potentially doing a first-time pistol comp this year.

I will be one of those folks who uses "action" comp to supplement being decently prepped for a life defense if needed - my work doesnt require a firearm and I do not expect I will ever need to draw. The comp pistol will be a defense pistol and its primary function is real world use/reliability.

preference is the 1911 platform - i can be patient on waiting til retail stocks back up for more options. i have an order pending to get a Kimber .22lr conversion for my RIA .45. I would like to purchase a separate 9mm 1911 for comp, but thinking to budget around $700 and dont see much in that range (retail cost, not market).
Completely understand I could just use my .45, but its also an excuse for another pistol.

With all that I am leaning to a CZ75 fullsize. Anyone have opinions to share?

Have you had ANY professional training at all? If so where? What?

Only one pistol course at ShootSocal couple months back. I am very much amateur - not trying to give the impression that I am going out there to win comps at all. Really isnt my goal - more just for fun and progress.

Just looking for opinions if the CZ75 would be a decent choice considering the earlier variables. I also am very open to taking more courses - i already planned on going to a couple comps just to watch.

CZ75 SP01 is a good choice to enter action pistol competitions. It is categorized as Production division, playing along other pistols such as Glock 17/19/34, XD, Beretta 92. One thing with CZ75 and any hammer fired double action pistols is that you have to carefully lower the hammer in a chambered round before the start of the timer. That is the rules for da/sa hammer fired pistol. Other than that, it is a great pistol as it weight soaks up the recoil nicely.

Very cool - Thanks for the info. Beretta 92 was my secondary lean. The "production" class term helps too, so I can know what to look out for on scheduling visits.

Not sure if you know - why is the hammer down a thing even when a hammer safety is available - is it based on accidents?

You need more training. You can't practice effectively what you don't know. Especially if you want to actually build up self defense skills as opposed to learning how to play a game with a gun. After that, look into IDPA.

Don't the local clubs have Intro to Competitions classes? I remember seeing them last year? at CTA.

Sounds good to me. I wasnt planning on entering one in the first 3/4 of this year. Have any input on a firearm?

Not sure - i dont know of any clubs and do not know anyone who has shot in comp outside of being on this forum. Research has been light - figured I would start with a decent firearm and move toward the goal of being in a comp.

No it is not based on accidents. Based on the rules for gun readiness for DA/SA in Production division it is hammer down on gun chambered. When you start cocked and locked, well your mimicking gun readiness of a Limited division. Limited division gun examples are STI 2011, CZ Tactical Sport, Glock 24/35 usually chambered in 40sw for Major Power factor.

OP, stop calling it "comp" and you'll fit right in. It's a "match".

Glock 17. Ive been an instructor since the late 90's. Shot alot of action pistol. Nothing is easier to learn to shoot well than a Glock 17. I've seen it over and over and over with hundreds of student and other competitors. Simple manual of arms, amazing reliability and durability, esay/cheap parts replacements when it does wear out/break. Amazing factory support (show up at any GSSF match and the factory armors will literally rebuild the gun with any new parts it needs, for free.)
