3 gun setup...

Hello,

I have decided I would like to shoot 3-gun matches... I see it as the auto-crossing of shooting sports.

I currently have (4) AR-15, (2) AR-10, SOCOM 16, and a Glock 22.

As with most events and sports... I seem to find that there is usually a setup that just works and works well...

What is a "standard" kit for 3-gun?

Yes... and don't really want to shoot he .40 in a comp... Would like something with a little less recoil.

First decision is what class to compete in. Based on your kit you need to decide on Heavy Metal vs Tactical.

Heavy Metal:
.40 or larger single-stack 1911-style - G22 won't work.
.308 or larger rifle (iron sights)
12G pump shotgun

Tactical:
9mm or larger pistol - factory-config
.223 or larger rifle - one optic allowed
20G or larger shotgun - semi-auto w/ 8-round tube.

Assuming you want to shoot your G22 you should go w/ Tactical (that's what I shoot).

I run an 18" JP-15 AR w/ rifle length gas system (current optic is an EOTech 557 w/ 3X magnifier but will be moving to a Burris XTR 1x-4x), CZ75 SP-01, and Remington 1100 w/ 8-round tube.

If you have the $$ then a Benelli M2 set up by Benny Hill is THE shotgun setup for 3Gun.

Pistols run the gambit but reliability is job one. Most folks shoot 9mm as there isn't major/minor scoring in most matches.

Rifles - JP is the dominant vendor.

Those are good choices. I would opt for the 9mm and a longer barrel/sight radius and maybe a longer barrel in case there are longer shots with the Ar. I went to one competition where there were shots out to 300 yards.
Here's what I have:

Ar-15 with 18" Free float barrel, Miculek Comp, Trijicon TLR-21 optic

Benelli M1 8 round tube

Glock 34

Not that I am an expert and I am actually a rookie to 3 gun matches. But this set up was recommended to me by some nationally ranked competitors. One of whom took second place in last years national 3 gun match. Good luck.

I will most likely pick a 34 up sometime this year. I have AR15s assembled in 16, 18, and 22 match barrels configs. Maybe I will run my 18" 6.5 Grendel to be different. I guess I can try them all and pick one. As for optics I am currently shooting with a ACOG (3.5). I really like the new IOR 1x/4x and the Trijicon TR24.

My guess is it will not matter as I am not very good with any of them... but I am at the rage once a week now.

At USPSA .tches you will be scored minor if you shoot a 9 MM. Stick with 40 cal. keep the Glock 22 or go to the Glock 35. The rest sounds good. I would stick with 223 over the 6.5 due to cost of ammo. Practice is expensive.

I use:
JP CTR-02 18" medium weight, Meopta K-dot
Benelli M2 21" (from Benny Hill)
CZ TS 9/.40 (9 for time-plus and .40 for comstock scoring)

As for optics I am currently shooting with a ACOG (3.5). I really like the new IOR 1x/4x and the Trijicon TR24.

I'd recommend to go with a 1-4. The ACOG is going to slow you down on the closer, hoser-style stages.
