.308 Load

I have getting together everything I need to start reloading .308 Winchester. I have everything ordered from Graf's that I need except primers and powder. I will be using a Dillon 550b and I have Lake City brass. I ordered 110 gr Hornady bullets.

Does it matter which primers that I use? And what powder do you guys recommend?

I am using a Tikka T3 which I can pick up on Tuesday!!!

Primers don't make a lot of difference as long as you work up to your final load using the same brand.

For the 308 with light bullets a bunch of powders will do. Try IMR4064, Hodgdon BLC-(2), Varget or IMR (or H) 4895

if your looking for pin point accuracy out of your tikka, you should look at other types of bullets like lupua 155 scenars, sierra match king 168/175 bullets.

my favorite two .308 powders are rl15 and varget.

if you also want an accurate load, use your 550 as a single press instead of a progressive and weigh your powder charges instead of using dillon's powder dispensor. an electronic powder dispensor is definitely a good investment.

i also recommend using benchrest quality primers like cci br2 primers. federal 210m primers are too scarce. wolf primers are supposed to be good, but i haven't tested them yet. a good, inexpensive primer is winchester.

Each rifle is different. My Remington 700 SPS Tactical 20" does very well with IMR4064 but did not do well with Varget. However, my Remington 700 VSF loves Varget. I plan to try RL 15 soon in my CZ 550 308, because it has not done well with either Varget or IMR 4064. You may have to play with a few powders.

Right now I am just looking for cheap but decent ammo to take to the range. 1000 bullets cost me $100. This is my first larger caliber rifle so I need something to practice with and wont cost me a fortune. To start I think I am just going to use the dillon powder dispenser but I will get an electronic powder dispenser eventually.

Does 30.06 use the same bullets as 308? And how many 231q1122 grains are in 1lb of powder?

Since you asked about the 110gr v-max, when I load up mine I use IMR 3031 and my .308-AR seems to love them. Check the hodgdon website and check the starting/max loads for the 110gr bullet listed and start around that area and work up. Also, check out the 168gr A-max bullets, I get some serious sub-MOA accuracy with that and Im still very new to reloading. Check out the AMAXs reviews on midwayusa, most people say they group better than the SMKs.

30.06 and the 308 win use the same bullets as do the 300 Win Mag, 300 H&H, 300 WSM, 300 savage, etc..

Sounds like you need to get and/or read a reloading manual thoroughly before you do anything else.

Before you reload, you should try a variety of bullets out of your gun to see what fires the most accurately. I have found that in my gun, it happens to be the 168 gr.

Once you have the bullet dialed down, then worry about reloading. Besides, if you do this, you'll have a bunch of fireformed brass

If you're looking to load a good "varmiter" round, I'd suggest the Nosler 125 grain ballistic tips. That will give you a little more energy and still put out a MV over 3000 FPS...
