It's not so much that long loaded ammo will be unsafe in your standard SAAMI firearms.. it's that they will not work in magazines and will not fit in the chambers of said SAAMI firearms.. they are not neccesarily unsafe..

If you took a Glock 20 with it's long 10 mm magazines, dropped in a 40 S&W barrel into it, you can now load those bullets longer to fit said magazines and as long as the leade in the barrel accomodates the longer bullet, it would then be safe to fire in that Glock. Since most G34's and 35's (orother standard guns made by Glock, Sig S&W, or whoever) are fitted with the shorter magazines, they MUST load shorter to accomodate the SAAMI length chamber/magazine combo..

It is correct that since you need seat the bullets deeper, you can't always use the same powder charge (it might not fit without compressiong the load). And compressed loads that are not book loads (anything that IMO is given on the internet not by a powder or bullet manufacturer) is to be approached with caution.

I have heard that Longshot with 180+ grain bullets is very good. You can get close to 10mm velocities from a 40S&W with that powder.

My wifey has an XD40 and we have found that the 155gr Speer Gold dot to be the absolute favorite in it. Very Very Accurate and that in Factory ammo.

Give it a try, you'll not find a better more manageable round for your weapon.......

Yes I am well aware of the price. For general plinking we use 165 grain ammo

I would highly recommend the Gold dot ammo for either carry or Home defense. 2nd on the list for stopping BG's is Federal HST ammo in 165gr.

HST is also very accurate, or so we have found....

Very good expansion and retention in both the HST and Gold Dot ammo....

I've done several thousand of **180** plated w/ 7.2g of Longshot...but I'm going to go down to 6.8 grains, since it's a little hot for everyday plinking ammo.

ETA: ...now that I think about it, they're 165 plated.

I prefer bullets in the 175 to 180g range myself.

It is easier to make a load for minor or major when compared to the lighter bullets and you end up using less powder.
