    Cheap Bastard Case Lube

I just got done with one of the Christmas gifts for my brother. He ordered a new Dillon 650 as his first reloading press. We used to load together using my dad's stuff, then he used my presses, but decided it was time for his own.

When he ordered the press, I asked if he wanted to get dillon case lube for the rifle brass. He said, "No, I will just make my own."

I decided to help him out with that by getting the supplies for him. I needed to make some more lube as well. It seemed too boring to just give the stuff without some directions and advertisement, especially since I hate advertisements and our family always makes fun of the crap they put in ads.

The Dillion Case Lube is great stuff, but my brother and I both like to make our own stuff when possible. I took inspiration, for the flier I made up, from Harbor Freight and other adds that make stupid claims that most smart people would not fall for. I'm sure we have all dealt with a "George" when calling support numbers for various companies as well.

Hopefully my brother will get a kick out of it.

    what did you call me!

you should actually sell it - I am sure there are plenty of soft headed people out there that would be willing to pay for it.

you can find lanolin oil on ebay or amazon.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

These were links that I found by searching the web for dillion lube. I landed on a Calguns thread with the links and iso heet.

The Iso Heet was on sale for $2.50 per bottle from Autozone, on their web site.

I figure this works out to 50 cents per ounce with the three bottles included. The dillon lube is between 8 and 12 ounces for 10 bucks. Their bottle is not labeled for size. My cost is 4-6 bucks for the same amount.

I have not mixed up any lube yet, but others on the web used the same products and claimed it worked great. I just came up with the idea for the flier as kind of a useful gag gift.

I am cheap, as I spent too much money on all the Dillon stuff.

              liquid lanolin...

...can be found locally at health food and/or vitamin stores. My 4oz bottle was $6-10. I used 99% alcohol from safeway pharmacy that was $3 for 16oz. I wanted the spray bottle to match the rest of the reloading gear, so mine cost $1.50 from winco.

                That's awesome.
You could start a whole line of products. Instead of Acme like we all know from Roadrunner cartoons we have CB.
Now we have to figure out what cartoon character are we all? I kind of see Stilly as a cross between Tasmanian devil and Yosemite Sam.
Me, I've always wanted to be Bugs Bunny but I'm probably more Sylvester.

I use Lanolin and ISO-Alky to make my own case lube and it's awesome, works fantastically well and costs almost nothing. I would have kept using DCL but the shops around me don't carry it anymore and the price is idiotically high for it. Costs me about 3-5 bucks to make a half gallon if I do it on a small scale but if you go big the savings piles up. You don't need expensive HEET 99% alky either. 70% and 91% works just fine. I got 5 gallons of 91% alky for $70 and a half gallon of pure lanolin for $60.

                  DCL cost me $1z.
                  Home made cost me: $0.19z.

That's a 5:1 cost benefit. I go through 8 ounces a month on average so it makes it a lot more affordable. I have enough for about 5 years left before I have to make another batch.

Are you processing brass for other people?

The 26 ounces that I can make from the half of the supplies I kept, will last me for years. I use hornady one shot for pistol brass though.

Yes, I have used 70-90% alcohol to thin down my old bottle of DCL in the past, but I figured I would try the 99% to see if it dissolved the lanolin any better. It was only slightly more expensive than what we get at rite aide.

I am surprised Stilly hasn't been in here yet. He has the imagination to make up some crazy stuff. It took me a while to come up with that flier. My mind is better at other types of work, but at least all those computer classes in HS and community college came in useful. I had made many fake documents in the past that were just an exercise in using the software.

heat the lanolin before you mix (just put the bottle in hot water) the alcohol % is going to effect the evaporation more than anything.

I have about 1.5GL of 99% I have yet to mix w/aqueous "sheep-juice", as I have not run out of DCL yet. Thanks for the idea of thinning the DCL, I hadn't thought of that, as I always overlube. That will probably increase the longevity of the spray head on the DCL bottle from getting clogged too, I assume. Mine hasn't "clogged", but is pretty "gummy" right now.

As far as bottles... I have bought from USplastics.com before for liquid containers, and all the products I received were great, and free from defects. (They are a Christian owned company, if you care, but I will buy from anyone if the price is right.) Their finger-spray bottles are here, 6th item down, looks just like the DCL 8oz bottle $1.02 ea: http://usplastics.com/search/?q=spra...view=l&skip=15
They offer discounts in bulk, if you buy enough, and as you place items in your cart, it will tell you the discount if you buy X QTY.
It looks like shipping on those would be like 9.xy for 10 8oz bottles, so just less than e-bay if you buy some. Maybe a group-buy would be a good option?

and to top it off get some graphite and some lead shot. use small container mix the graphite and lead and use it as a case neck luber. BAM

I actually just bought a ton of graphite on ebay and was looking for stuff to do with it lol.

I just used 0W-20 synthetic motor oil and works pretty good, but it requires washing the cases afterward. Simply tumbling them will contaminate the tumbling media and will become oily.
