New IMR 4166 tester needed

I shot a bunch of 168 gr 308 with 42gr of 4064 and a quick 5 with 38 gr of 4166. They did group pretty much the same interestingly. Haven't shot in a while as my groups were quite lame.

I just picked some IMR 4166 on Friday and shot them Sunday morning for the first time. .224 55 gr VMax. (2) 9 round groups, three different powder charges and two different primers CCI 200 and Rem 7-1/2 Primers. They shot extremely well. Load development will be easy and quickly with this powder.

Well crap. I guess I need to figure out when I can shoot, if other folks are getting out before me!

I will say I did NOT like how it metered, or how much it filled the case for my .223. A max charge in .223 was overflowing, without tapping the case on the table for several seconds to make room to dump the last of the powder in.

Had the same problem Spyder, loaded 36 up and had to redo about 1/3 due to overcharge and had to pour slow to get it into the case. I was surprised that with just minimum charges that it was so close to a full case. I loved how the first session went with this powder.

Are you guys using long drop tubes on your powder funnel?

No powder funnel. RCBS Chargemaster dropped in to metal pour thingy, and from pour thingy straight in to the case.

This is my first testing with IMR-4166 and Looking Great! and Yes, The kernals are big and can be hard to Meter.

Gun is:

Savage Axis in 308W (22" barell, 1-10" twist). Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40 Scope.

Only Mods to gun is Timney varmint trigger set at 1.5lbs and a Boyds Tacticool stock.

Bullet used: Nosler 168 Gr HPBT match
Primer: Win WLR (also, primers are over 14 years old!)
Lapua 308 Cases.
COAL: 2.908" (.005" off rifling)

Could not get the chrono to work today though.

Not Bad for a rifle I have less than $700 invested in!

I'll have some real target data and photos soon too. Range day is set for Saturday the 3rd, and I'm picking up a brand new .308 the day before to test this stuff out on. I'm excited.

I think it meters fine. In that regard it's just like Varget. I just don't like anything near max loads, as it's overflowing out of the case.

Do you still need another tester. I got a PSS in 308 and a win 70 HBV in 22-250. That powder may be a bit fast for 300 WSM unless I load 155 grain bullets.

It does meter fine in my Redding 3BR measure, but was a little larger Kernels than I expected. I shoot a lot of Vihtavouri powders and 4166 is definitely larger kernels.

overall, I am liking the powder. and it does burn clean.

JTROKS. Have a bit more I can give away to you. Shot some in my TRG. Still learning about this powder and would like to hear more results before I start talking about it as if I know about it. Thanks,

I loaded 46.0 of 4166 with a 155 palma in my 308 and it shot in the .2's
I did not chronograph this load but I will and post the results. Rifle was a Rem 700 with a 28" heavy Palma Kreiger barrel
