Question about bullets

I had no issues pushing 124gr plated to around 124gr NATO jacketed velocities in any plated brand I used (in testing), however I worked up... slowly, then settled back down. Plated is like a cross between jacketed and lead when reloading it, just work up slow. I eventually settled on saving powder, while giving them though power to (fully) cycle both 9mm's we have.

Jacketed pistol bullets are made using a small round disc stamped out of copper sheeting. The disc is forced into a die that shapes it by a press and then the lead is pressed into the shaped copper jacket then the jacket base is crimped or rolled over the lead to hold it in place. High end jacketed HP's often use a bonded core for lead retention and are shaped from the back instead of the front.

A plated bullet is a cast or swagged lead bullet that is under sized for the intended bore diameter. It is then dipped in a copper bath, removed and allowed to cool, then sized to the selected diameter.

Plated bullets were invented to reduce airborne lead in indoor ranges and lack the accuracy potential of quality jacketed bullets, and also lack the ability to retain their lead core when shot into more solid targets such as flesh. They also tend to shed their plating when pushed to higher velocities or are shot their barrels with deep, sharp rifling. This results in a severe loss of accuracy.

For identifying the difference between the small/large rifle primer pockets for the 45 ACP, is it normally enough of a difference to tell just by looking at them?

That's how I do it. My method involves visual inspection and a couple of the plastic ammo holders, you know, the ones from the factory boxes. I just put the SPP ones into one ammo holder, and the LPP ones into another ammo holder. Visually inspect again after each ammo holder gets filled up. Once you do it enough times, you get pretty fast with it.

Load data, BTW, is the same for both SPP and LPP versions, unless you're running an absolute max load with SPP cases. Then you might want to back down 5% and work back up. But that's always true any time you change components, isn't it? I ended up with two loadings, a standard "near-max" load, and a "+P" load, both of which work very well in my guns in both SPP and LPP cases.

The SAAMI spec, just FYI, is actually LPP. The reason they use SPP's is because of the new non-lead-containing primer compound (LPP versions would be too hot, they apparently discovered). It also helps manufacturing costs some, because they can use the same primer machinery setup for 9mm, .40 S&W, and (non-toxic) .45 ACP.
