    What Temperature Will Set Off a Primer?

    Just put a bunch of brass in the oven to dry. Certainly a 150 degree over is fine, but it made me wonder about what temp it takes to set off a primer.

    If I got careless, I can see accidentally dropping a primed brass in my tub of dirty brass and having it end up in the oven after cleaning.

    Checked my primer box and surprised it doesn't even give a max storage temp.

    Just curious if anyone ever baked a primer to see at what temp it would fire. My apt management probably wouldn't like it if they found I was testing explosives in their oven, so I can't try it myself

      try You Tube. I watched a video of a guy doing just that...seeing at what temperature a primer would go off. He used a griddle and a propane stove.

          its probably because you would die at the temperature it would take to set off a primer.

          I've seen people do mag dumps on AR'S and I'm sure that bolt is over 400 deg.

              I have to agree with the above, I read a thread where someone cooked ammo to see if it would go off. ( They did this in a safe controlled environment not some home oven ) At about 327 degrees the lead melted and the ammo had still not exploded.

                  In the Winchester leaflet that comes in the cases of primers the only temp listed is above 140 deg.... but it is listed under the heading of " Conditions which may cause misfires or poor ignition" In other areas of the leaflet it just says to keep away from heat, flame etc.

                      led melts at 650 F and up depending on alloy.

                        I just looked the auto ignition temp is 330 C. Pretty high.

                          I thought modern primers were made from DDNP. Lead Azide are the older corrosive primers I believe.
                          MSDS for CCI primers says 200 celcius or nearly 400 F

                            I thought Mercury primers were the corrosive ones. Lead azide was the new material and now they are going to some non-toxic thing. But not all primers are there yet! So we can assume it's somewhere between 200 and 330 C which is damn hot, not a temp one is likely to see on an average day.
