45 ACP Primers?

I've noticed that the 45ACP which used to always use large pistol primers now some manufacturers have switched to small pistol primers? I just picked up my 1st 1911 in 45ACP and plan to reload for it and would prefer to stay away from buying factory ammo with small primers as I already own 5000 large pistol primers. Not thinking of it, this morning I purchased some ammo and didn't check, 1 of the 3 boxes (Federal) has the small pistol primers, the Winchester and Perfecta have large pistol primers. Do any of you know what other manufacturers like Federal have switched to the small primer cases? Thanks

CCI Blasers or Blazers WTFE they are called have gone that way. I THINK There are some Fiocchi out there too, but your best bet is to open the box and inspect the bum of a case to see if the primer is small or large. Others will chime in too but I think currently the main three to watch for are Federal, Fiocchi and CCI Blazer.


The good news about this is at the current time, it is only about 1/5 or so of the cases out there are sp for .45 acp... At least when I pick them up they are.

I think there was a thread on here (or somewhere) that looked at small and large pocket brass and found that if you do 'switch' you'll need to adjust your load somewhat. Why da F*** did anyone ever introduce the small pocket for 45? Was there somthing wrong with a nice big primer that worked quite well for over a century?

Originally it was for non-tox rounds. The more "eco-friendly" primer was in small pistol.

The difference can't amount to more than mice nuts as my shop teacher used to say.

I separate my .45 into large and small primer groups and it is a pain in the butt to have to separate them. Fortunately I have other calibers that use small pistol primers so I keep a supply of both primer sizes on hand and can load either size primer then.

I haven't seen any SP .45 cases yet, but then again I've been reloading the same tub of brass for about 15 years or so.

If I ever mistakenly pick up any cases that need SP, I'll just toss them in the recycle bucket.

I load for 9mm, 357SIG, & 40S&W also so I have small primers but l have also heard that when reloading the 45ACP you may have to modify your recipe for small primer cases to get the same results as a LP case. Which is kind of a pain once you find what you like.

I may have some large primer factory .45 I bought before we were reloading. I'll trade you if you haven't already shot your SP factory .45. We have standardized on SP primers and aren't reloading large. If you are interested send me a pm and I'll check what I have.

Meh. It seems that people tend to leave the SPP .45 cases on the ground at the range. I pick them up, sort them from the LPP and load for plinking.

I load on a single stage, so if I occasionally mis-sort one it isn't the end of the world. Free brass is OK with me.
