Yep, I did that too, at first. Next time, though, it took about 5,000 rounds before it was time to replace it. A couple of spares are indeed good to have around.

That said, I've found that the fastest speeds are gotten when indexing manually and short-stroking the press except for the priming stroke. I went up from 120 rounds/hour to 150 by so doing. This is with .45 ACP.

Mine will never wear out, I don't use it. I like to hand index it all my rounds.

Just be aware when reloading .223 and manually indexing, the bullet will fit very nicely into the rifle charging die and stick there. And as an added bonus, all the extra powder that will spill out once you remove the powder dropper makes for a good time to clean up. Ask me how I know...
