Federal primer packaging. WTF???

Today I received some primers from Midsouthshooters. One of the boxes was Federal primers because that's all they had left in LRP at the time I ordered. The box of primers was huge: over twice the size of any other box of primers I've seen. At first I thought they sent me a larger quantity than I ordered. But upon opening the box, I discovered the plastic trays are HUGE and all the primers are lying on their side instead of lying flat. But even for the sideways orientation, the trays are almost three times deeper than they need to be. What's up with that? What a waste of plastic and cardboard, of shipping volume, and of my storage space.

As I heard, the packaging is an international shipping requirement.

I just picked some federal large rifle magnum and thought the same thing. I wonder if there is a reason why they do it this way?

A few (several) years ago, there was a rumor that the feds were going to require all primers to be sold in this packaging. Federal bought into it and switched. The rumor died and so they are the only one to still package primers that way. I am guessing that someone owning that packaging company had a deal with a senator or congressman, but it went bad.

I haven't tried it yet, but was thinking about that too. I'll probably avoid Federal primers in the future.

Because of the packaging? Or is there another reason you don't like the Federal primers?

You're right. They test boxes of primers and if they get a big boom, they redesign the packaging until they no longer go boom. With primers, it's getting some distance between the primers that does the trick.

That's trivial. I thought you were going to complain about the box being bigger than your primer tray. I bought the square RCBS primer tray, which is a perfect fit for this packaging.

I do agree that large quantities of these primers takes up a lot of storage space. A good lockup for them is a Stack-On rifle cabinet for under $100.

I like the tabs on the back that get hung up when you try to slide the cover. The floppy card board that let's the primers come out of the packaging while your screwing with those tabs. The packaging is overly complicated & inconvenient . I have to think about all of the things that have gone wrong in the past before I start flipping the packaging around. I like their products.

I have dropped many a Federal primer on the floor. It is a real hassle to get some tweezers to pick them up. Human body oils are very bad for the primers. I have had misfires and hang fires from picking up primers with my fingers.

Usually, with Federal, I fold a piece of 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper and dump the primers onto that ... then I carefully funnel those things into the primer tray.

What a real hassle! This is why I no longer use Federal ... I would use them more ... but their packaging really sucks!

Glad to know I'm not the only one perturbed by this. Perhaps I'll forward these comments to Federal. I wonder if they realize how many sales they're losing due to their packaging?
