Sounds crazy but you have an excellent set of tools right at the end of your arm. Your fingers can feel for the flare. Put the round with seated bullet between thumb & forefinger & you'll be able to feel if any flaring is left. Watch an auto body guy working bondo. He'll be using his hands to feel for high & low spots as much as his eyeball.

Probably not. You can close the thick part of your caliper around the case mouth & eyeball with a white background. If there's flare left you can easily see daylight behind the mouth. With .45ACP I look for flat or just the slightest bit of taper crimp. With the straightedge of the jaws it's not hard to see.
9mm is a little harder because it's a tapered case. Again, the straight edge of the jaws will help see exactly what's going on. I usually figure if I can actually SEE the taper it's probably too much.
I R old & blind so I use a set of magnifiers from Harbor Freight while doing this.
