    Lets talk about brass catchers

What do you guys use for indoor ranges? I made a nice pvc brass catcher for out on BLM and it works just fine, however, during the summer months I am forced to shoot indoors (Fire season). My last range trip, I felt like I spent more time worrying about my brass than I did actually shooting. Even after policing my brass and having to get down on my hands and knees, I still only brought home maybe 50% of what I shot.

Is there a better way? There must be a better way

Yeah but it looks ghey at an indoor range where it is cramped already if you are not alone.

I have an OCD where I can not shoot unless the floor has no shinies on it so when I get to my favorite indoor range I immediately sweep up all of the brass in my area and the left and right sides- if nobody minds. Then I will proceed to shoot and police my brass if need be. I ALSO (this is really sad) will vary my position based on how my shells will eject so that I can give them a chance to bounce off of the divider and back into my area or behind me.

    Example:
Deagle shoots BLUE DOT, H-110, OTHERS

On Blue dot I will move up against the right divider and UP on the line so that the shells bounce off it and hit the back wall at my cases/bags. If I do not it hits the guys in the back to my right or it bounces off the wall and hits them that way as they are reloading.

On H-110 the shells tend to run in front of me, so I will take a step or two back to almost be in the walking area and the move towards left of center of the space. Then they will drop and maybe make it past the line as they make a run for freedom. (sometimes 44 mag rounds loaded with H-110 will land 10'+ in front of me and makes it hard to retrieve them, even with the squeegee).

On others I will fire once and watch where it flies/lands, then adjust my position accordingly.

Doing this has given me a 98% recovery rate on my indoor 44 mag brass.

    Good luck.

I use my home made PVC brass catcher when I go to the indoor range. I was only getting about half of my brass when I would get on my hands and knees to retrieve it. I would try to adjust where I stood in my lane, but a majority of my brass would still bounce into the next lane.

With the brass catcher, about 90% of the brass is caught and the rest fall relatively near for me to pick up.

$10 Caldwell .223 AR catchers save me from bending down, except to pickup everyone else's brass. I also use on on the 7.5" pistol. My wife uses them on her .22LR rifles as she doesn't like the brass hitting her.

Pistols outdoors, a large blanket catches most of them.

Here's some instructions and links on how to build a pretty good brass net that works for outdoor and indoor.

For outdoor standing up shooting you swap in a tall pipe, for indoor put in a short pipe and if you have the net right next to the gun it catches everything.

Nothing sucks worse then policing your brass from Brass Vultures and crabby ROs. And having to pick it all up off the floor is never pleasant.
If anyone builds something similar please share any tips or good ideas.

                      Reloading Disease.
Description: Ruins the fun of shooting because you obsess about finding all your brass.
Symptoms: Picking up brass after every magazine, Concentrating more on where brass is landing than where the bullet is impacting, spending more time canvassing the area for brass than actually shooting(either for other peoples brass or for your own that you can't find)
Side effects: Some will try to self treat this affliction by changing what firearms they use. They will buy revolvers and bolt guns instead of their beloved pistols and semi-auto rifles.
Cure: unknown. There are different treatments. Brass catchers, only shooting at ranges where they let you sweep the brass and thereby come home with more than when you left, having a buddy that works for a police department where he can bring you range brass that is so often just recycled for scrap.
You can throw money at it: buying once fired brass from various sources for cheap to replenish your dwindling supplies.

The only true treatment is to force yourself to relax, look for the brass you can find but don't sweat the stuff you can't find. UNLESS you shoot a rare or uncommon caliber. Then all bets are off.

Do what I do. Walk away. Don't reload, look for ammo deals instead.

I only pick up my brass when I'm outside and it needs to be done to clean up.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. To me, that thing is an abomination. ARs are made for both, fast tactical type shooting and also bench shooting at paper targets.

If you were shooting from the bench, then you do not need that since all your brass lands in the same spot next to you.

If you are shooting on the move, at least to me, that things would get in the way of my peripheral vision and be a giant negative.

I see no use for it.

                              What are you, a millionaire?

There are lots of reasons to reload, but with super common calibers like 9,40,45, .223, etc there is plenty out there to be picked up free from those who don't reload. But when you are shooting for accuracy, or shooting an uncommon caliber or something that is otherwise obsolete, then reloading, and saving that brass is the only way.
