    50 beowulf reloading data

From what I can see, lots of people use the lil gun powder. I was wondering if anyone has used Herco powder? I have a 44 mag and I use to use H110. but found out Herco works a little better for me. And since there is data that the beowulf uses H110. Couldnt it use Herco? Much help would be nice!!

I have never used Herco but I have loads for Alliant 2400 and IMR4227 if you want them to use a cross reference.

Check out W296 as well - I use it for .458 SOCOM where H110 and 4227 are popular (very similar burn rate).

I load 43gr of h110 under a hornady 300gr ftx, crimp to cannelure, Winchester large pistol primer.

I first attempt to consult pre-published load data. Luckily for me, Shooting Times magazine published some .458SOCOM data back in 2006/2008 that I was able to reference. I know you are looking for 50BEO data, but the 'big bore / magnum pistol' powders and methods used will likely be the same.

I was not able to find 4227, 4198, Lil' Gun, or H110 that were main recommended but then started looking for alternate mag pistol powders and found W296 was very similar and is a nice fine grain ball powder that meters easily.

Consult a powder burn rate chart like the one in the Hornady's 9th edition reloading manual to find another powder very close on the list. Here's Hodgdon's list: http://www.hodgdon.com/burn-rate.html

From there I loaded at 85% of the max load for the powder selected and use projectiles from the middle of the mass spectrum. Ladder charge from there in small batches but do NOT load up to max on your first go around. I used CCI 350 Mag SPP to help reduce chances of slam firing - you may want to look into this for 50BEO and see if it is recommended.

All this assumes you have a lot of experience reloading and know what to look for as far as overpressure signs. I had some bad luck with overcharged Corbon factory ammo that gave me paranoia and I purposely started extra light on my first test loads for this caliber.

If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

Hm, seems on the burn chart it shows Herco as a 35 and that Lil'gun and H110 Are 63-64. Hm... And I havnt found anyone who has used Herco powder Yet. So I dont have a starting point? xD

Yeaaa I dont think that is something I'd try either. If nobody else is using it, that's probably because it is not a good choice. For 44mag herco may be OK but that is totally dependent on case volume, projectile weight, velocity, etc. There will be a TON more pressure in your .50BEO chamber than .44mag based on barrel length and the faster burning Herco would probably exceed SAAMI pressure specs for .50BEO.

If you happen to be in the SF Bay area, I know of 2 local shops that have H110/W296/IMR4198/4227 available.

Hm, very true. Then again, there really isn't to much reloads on Herco powder either. So it could be also that too.

I was finally able to reload for my 'Wulf' when I scooped up 6# of Alliant RL7 back in May. About half a dozen loads for 400GR + can use RL7. I have been unable to score 'lil gun in 8 months of searching, so I can load some 300 325 or 350.
