    Hornady Die Problem

On another post I talked about the Hornady 9MM size/decap die and sticking problems. I sent the die to Hornady and after two weeks I received the die back with the following information:

TP CLEANED AND POLISHED RING WAS LOOSE RE-SWAGED. SI ZED CASE WITH NO ISSUES.

Can anyone tell me exactly what it means? We will see if it now performs as well as the Lee size/decap die I bought.

I think they mean the TiN sizing ring was loose so they fixed it.

I have the same dies but don't have that issue. My only problem is trying to get the torque just right on the zip rod, sometimes the zip rod will push up because it's not tight enough. If it's too tight though if for some reason the case isn't lined up it will bend the decap pin and/or the zip rod. I already bent one zip rod and Hornady sent me a replacement free of charge and quite quickly, great customer service but I can't say I'm completely happy with the dies. If I keep having problems I'll get some dillon dies, been very happy with them so far.

        That's what I read too.

They cleaned and polished the ring.
They found that it was loose and re-swaged it into the body.
They tested it by sizing a case and encounter no issues.

Just curious, did you lube the cases before running them through the die?
It says to in the instruction sheet that comes with them

If they are carbide does then lube isn't needed.

Just buy a different die. Hornady takes the cake for crappiest dies. They make Lee seem like match grade.

Interesting because THAT is the only thing that made me want to get a set of them. SUPPOSEDLY they had a TiN coating and their TiN ring was BETTER and HARDER than carbide so you did not need any lube at all.

This was a selling point for them in a catalog I recently had. Either midsouth shooter or midway I think. but if the docs say to use lube all the time, then that is a load of horse **** and I am glad I have Lee carbide dies...

As I stated, I bought a Lee Carbide die and it works very well without lube. Will try the "repaired" die and report back.

If they are 9x19, they often benefit from a little lube and this may be why the TiN insert was loosened. The TiN insert is usually so smooth that it is one of the very few dies that doesn't "need" lube for 9x19.
For me, I very seldom need to lube 9x19 cases, but there are some days that, for some reason, those darn cases just won't let go of the die.

Try sizing with no lube and then lubed; it's like the press was power assisted with the lubed cases. Especially with 9mm.

Hornady's One Shot Case Lube works great, it's quick and easy. I was just reading an article in Guns or American Handgunner, where the author stated he always uses a spray of One Shot before sizing in carbide dies. Guess I ain't so obsessive after all.

Just remember that I have purchased defective dies from every manufacturer: RCBS, Forster, Hornady, Redding, Lee all make duds that get through to the market. It's how they handle a defective product that counts, why some have even comped me a new die, or parts, when I wanted to buy a replacement for one I botched up myself.
