First time reloading

This is my first time reloading so bear with me.
I got my cases all cleaned and prepped.
When i went to load my first bullet, I couldn't help but notice the end of the case is about .100 away from the cannelur, while holding COAL to 2.800
Bullets are Hornady FMJ/BT 150 gr
Am I suppose to crimp it there or does it have to down farther?

Both but for now just the bolt action

Crimp if you must,but its not necessary.

For bolt I don't crimp, for auto I crimp but it doesn't have to be crimped at the cannelure.

Im curious...have you ever not crimped a cartridge for auto loader?

well after 20yrs of reloading and several thousand rds from my auto loaders and bolt rifles I have not crimped one.I dont bring it up to boast ,but the 308 really doesnt generate high enough pressure to cause me to worry.

Book COAL for the 150gr FMJBT is 2.775" That would explain some of the distance to your cannelure.

Edit thats for Sierra, Hornady COAL is 2.700" So yeah if you wanna crimp seat deeper.

Im curious...have you ever not crimped a cartridge for auto loader?

I am assuming you are concerned about the recoil of the rifle?
Would this matter if it where a bolt action that is magazine fed?

The kit that I bought came with a Nosler book.
I have a Hornady manual on the way, along with an OAL gage, and Bullet Comparator

I do not crimp rifle rounds. I shoot bolt/single shot/pump/autoloaders. I have M1A/Mini14 & 30/SKS/Rem 740 &742 &760 as well as one lever action. Loaded and shot many 1000's of rounds over many years without any trouble.
