IMO if your AR is the first weapon of choice for HD you're grabbing the wrong weapon. A pistol is much more maneuverable in tight situations like that, plus I seriously doubt your AR is sitting right next to your bed ready to go. Take your AR for a test run clearing your house, and see how difficult it is around corners & clearing behind doors. Then do the same with your pistol. Your pistol shoots the same exact amount of ammo at the same rate as your AR, but because there is less mass to sling around you'll get off much faster shots with better placement.

This will give you time to come up with a great story as your hearing and eyesight start to improve.
If the intruder is wearing a bullet proof vest the energy from the round will most likely knock him down.If he/she falls face down turn them over and keep shooting.
Remember your hearing will be impaired anyway so You might as well finish the job while waiting for your ears to quit ringing.

A 40gr Hornady ballistic tip going around NATO velocities will put an exit wound larger than the size of baseball in a rooster at 20-25'.

I have a couple pistols for immediate threat, and 62grn SP in my AR when it just sits at home. I figure, good enough for a giant hog's thick skin, good enough for an intruder if I can't get to my handgun.

A handgun buys you time to get to your rifle.

62 grain flex tip are prob the best HD round for a 223,
but a 45 gets the job done better

Would the plastic be better than the soft as it would more evenly expand the bullet? Ihave noticed that some lead SP test gels aren't consistent between tests.

In short, plastic tips are added to promote rapid expansion and/or increase ballistic coefficient. One does not necessarily mean the other. The A-Max has a plastic tip solely to increase ballistic coefficient. The V-Max has a plastic tip to both increase ballistic coefficient AND to promote rapid expansion.

So, compared to a soft point, bullets designed primarily for rapid expansion with plastic tips likely more reliably expand than soft point bullets. Bullets designed with plastic tips primarily for increased ballistic coefficient may or may not perform better than soft point ammo.

Sounds like I got it right then as I purchased the 62grn SP for close home defense and the hogs about 100-200yds from my girlfriend's porch.
