I visit the metal recycle place every few month. I have not seen any good lead in about a year. They have junk lead which could be anything.

I dont cast but curious to know what the difference would be. How does it affect the bullet?Comment

The make up of casting lead needs ton and possibly amtimony to make it hard enough to aid in preventing leading of the bore. Pure lead as a rule is only used for muzzle loaders.Last edited by BigBronco; 04-27-2014, 6:19 PM."Life is a long song" Jethro TullComment

I just started casting too, found some lead ingots off E-Bay and Craigslist.
A friend of mine had some lead ingots made form fishing weights and lead wheel weights that I"ve used.
I haven't done this yet but, thinking of checking some tire shops.
I know lead wheel weights were phased out, but they still may have some laying around. Good Luck!Comment

I get met with a look of disdain (I can HEAR it through their voice) from time to time when I call up a tire shop or brake shop or WHATEVER and ask about lead. I think they lump you into the TWEAKER category.
I BELIEVE per federal regs that ALL LEAD HAS BEEN BANNED NATIONWIDE for use as tireweights because it is so hazardous and yadda yadda yadda...
When I become president I will announce that EVERYTHING gives you cancer so STFU about it already and lets stop banning things! Except libtards. We can ban them still.
Back east and on ebay it is honestly BEST to look for folks that are selling lead that has been fluxed and poured into ingots. Believe me, if you are NEW to casting then you can get confused. I scraped off that damn purple and blue layer one night for about an hour before I said to hell with it and I just poured the lead into the ingot molds... (casters enjoy hearing that one!)
So now I have a bunch of blue and purple and gold slag, but the reality is...
So anyways, best place is prolly online and you can get some from castboolits.com for decent pricing. I am gonna order about 600lbs when I get back on my feet. That is ONLY about $600.00 including shipping...7 Billion people on the planet. They aint ALL gonna astronauts. Some will get hit by trains...

And remember- 99.9% of the lawyers ruin it for the other .1%...Comment

I've bought mine off of castboolits.com. They're pretty good at identifying the type of lead. I bought 50 lbs of reclaimed lead from a range for about $1.25/lb shipped. Now it seems most is going for closer to $1.75-$2/lb shipped. Also keep an eye out at garage sales, flea markets, other forums and craigslist. Scuba diving and fishing weights are usually a good source for pure lead. Same with sailboat ballast. Sometimes you can find lead at circle track race shops, though they tend to sell at a higher price than the going market. On a motorcycle forum I'm on, I split half of a fishing weight horde with another guy and I came home with 200lbs of nice clean lead FOR FREE! Just gotta keep your eyes peeled. I wouldn't waste your time with tire shops. Most already have some sort of deal with a guy or recycler to take it, plus a lot of wheel weights in CA are zinc now. It's getting harder to find lead weights at shops."If a man hasn't found something worth dying for, he isn't fit to live." - Martin Luther King Jr.

The problem with ebay is you don't really know what you get. I bought some lead and it was contaminated with zinc. It made casting difficult.
If you are starting out, you should get lead from a known good source. It will save you a lot of headaches when trying to figure out if any problems you are having are caused by the lead or something else. Good lead is a pleasure to cast with. Bad lead can make you smash your melting pot.

A tip for getting lead from tire shops. More than once I have had to buy a new set of tires. Now only work with the manager or owner of the tire shop when buying the tires. at the point of agreeing to the purchase I have said. I'll will take the tires if you toss in some scrap lead wheel weights.
This more than once has got me 3/4th of a 5 gallon bucket of free wheel weights. This is getting harder to do in CA however who says you need to buy your tires in CA.
