Time for you to buy a reloading manual it will answer all your questions. What are you shooting with a 12# recoil spring?

The way it works is this, you get your manual, learn about relaoding, then come here and ask questions about things that the manual did not cover completely or you need help understanding better.

If you try to do it the other way, it is like running your hands the wrong way on a shark or a cat, take your pick...

        Input 45 ACP, 185, 231.

        Read 5-6grs.

Go with 5 because you have a 12lb spring.

After you're done messing around, get some Bullseye.

Dump the 12# spring. You'll batter the frame with all but the very lightest loads. 16# is a standard spring for a 1911. I use an 18# in my Gold Cup, along with a Wilson Shok-Buff.

With a selected load, if cases are ejected more than 8-10 feet away, consider going to a heavier spring but not heavier than 18.5# for a full size 1911.

          My 2 cents worth.

Maybe that's what he wants? Light loads.

well, he did mention 12# spring which is very light for 45's. in a gold cup match with light wadcutters it'd probably be ok. most 45 loads listed will be a little heavy for a 12# spring. besides, it's a very inexpensive part and super easy to swap.

there certainly is reason to find the right recoil spring to work with your loads and tailor a load to work well. no reason to run hotter loads just to cycle an 18# spring.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

I do not even know what my springs are measured at. How do you find out the weight of your springs?

I guess you have to have them marked and know where they come from and DEPEND on your source for the info to be correct... :\
