Brass catcher for AR-15

Seems to be a few options out there for brass catchers for AR-15s. Anyone use one? Recommendations? Pros and Cons?

I have one made by Caldwell...uses a Velcro strap to hold on to the gun. Works ok, nothing to write home about.

The Caldwell works well... Just put a cardboard liner right by the opening, it keeps the netting open. Without it the brass catcher actually blocks the brass from entering the bag.

I've heard that brand works well for the SKS so I'm sure it would be good for the AR15 as well. They have a lot of versions available which is nice but the one for the M1 carbine completely blocks the rear sight.



If you go for the Caldwell version, I've heard people have better luck by unzipping the bottom of the bag and letting the brass fall onto the bench.

I use Caldwell type with one velcro that wraps around hand guard.
I leave zipper open so the brass just drops to floor.
When the bag starts to fill with the brass catcher sags.
Sagging causes blocked ejection port.

None of the brass catchers work that well, so just shoot next to someone that isn't saving their brass. You will come home with more than what you shot anyways.

I've got one of the Velcro bags, and even with bracing around the opening once it gets a few pieces of brass in it the mesh part sags and brass sometimes bounces back causing jams. The solution is to unzip it, allowing the brass to fall. That's okay if you're shooting in standing position and want it dropping at your feet, but from a bench, it tends to land on or roll to your arm, and the brass is very hot.

I've looked at the E&L plastic catchers, but they're a bit pricey and some do seem to block the sights. I'm very tempted by the SKS and AK models, though.

I normally use a bench mounted homemade net catcher. It works well on the bench or prone, but is tough to set up for shooting from standing. They're easy to build from pvc pipe and connectors and a large mesh mesh laundry bag. A small clamp keeps it well secured on the bench. It works well with all of my rifles except my SKS which likes to eject upwards...

I still make the effort to pick up some extra whenever I can though!

Walked away with about 200 one fired PMC brass cases shooting next to a guy who got a new Tavor. Told him I'll clean up for him when he was ready to leave.

I made my own out of PVC pipes and netting. It's more of a stand with a large net opening that can be adjusted for height. The only downside is that I can't adjust it all the way down if I go prone, however, using a cardboard box works just as well at that level.

I actually found the design here so I'm sure you can find something if you searched.

Had a friend use this at ASR last month. I was pretty impressed with it.

I use a cheapy UTG, which is a copy of the Caldwell product. I also unzip the bottom, and it's worked well for ARs, a PTR, and even a .22 rifle (I once shot next to a guy shooting a magnum, but he complained about my .22 brass hitting him)

The hard plastic rail mounted ones look to be more effective, but at $50+, that's a lot of spent brass I could buy instead.
