    Falcon Coated Bullets: Review

Loaded a handful and shot them this evening.
    WWB 115gn FMJ avg fps = 1148.
Using range brass and 4.3gr Win231, Falcon 115gr LRN avg fps = 1085,
    Falcon 115gr coated avg fps = 1091.

No difference in accuracy, loaded the same in the Dillon with no more or less drag and same OAL when seating. Slightly less smoke.

BIG DIFFERENCE: much, MUCH cleaner. My Barsto Commander barrel was slick as a whistle, and I'll order more for that reason alone.

Hope this helps. Target is 15yds, offhand, standing with carry sights, 1978 Colt Combat Commander in 9mm.

    GREAT service.

introductory price for .40 cal is 10 cents each.
I can find jacketed bullets for .11 cents each at powder valley.
Other than that, I fully expect them to perform great. Powder coated bullets work exceptionally well. I'd rather cast my own for .005 each(cost of powder coating) but hey, I'm sure people will buy them. Gosh I'm sucha cheap skate!

Price looks decent, but I aint thrilled about the exposed bases. Did you hammer on one with a 2lb sledge on a bench vise to see how it handled itself?

Also, is that like a metallic deep red?

I am gonna get some bright red for my PC tumbling soon... And purple...

Wow! Just as I am gearing up to PC my cast bullets. Just too committed to stop now.

I have tried the VHT spray Epoxy paint and baking then curing a week. Not too thrilled with the first results, getting some minor exposed lead when sizing. mostly at the mold seam line.

That will happen if you have a little too much sizing to do. You can pre size them before coating them using some case sizing lube like lanolin, then washing the lube off after. Dry them from the washing process, then coat them. If you size to .001 over groove diameter, then coat, you should still be plenty safe to shoot them after coating without additional sizing.

what's the deal about exposed bases?

standard lubed bullets are exposed too

any coating on the base would burn off at ignition, wouldn't it?

POWDER COATING? I can throw a powder coated bullet into my casting pot and it takes a couple seconds for the coating to burn off.

What coating are you referring to that a primer can burn it off?

And BTW, all my pistol bases are exposed lead and it doesn't cause a problem. Why would it cause a problem at 800-1000 FPS?

Rifle bullets going 1800FPS for example, will need a gas check. But even then, some guys report coating the bases of their rifle bullets with powder coating instead of a gas check, and it works to stop the leading. Accuracy is poor but that is to be expected from a gas checked design bullet without a gas check.

I was referring to the extra coating along the bottom edges of the Falcon bullets.

Well then you are not too familiar with PC then...

Durability shot, The red was hammered (literally)

The two BLUES were shot out of a 1911 with 5.2gr of HP-38.

Bases do not look burned away to me...

If I am gonna buy coated bullets, then I want that coating to be COMPLETE and cover the entire bullet. That is ONE advantage is that you can have a bullet that is totally encapsulated so no lead vapors from the bullet, no lead marks, no nothing.

Even my half-assed ways of coating the bullets produce a fully encapsulated bullet, so that at least gets past THAT test.

Why coat if it is only to still have exposed lead?

Honestly, this is a race to get from point A to point B where A is lead bullets and B is fully coated bullets and the object is to get there as CHEAP as possible and still do a good job. SO far, I think PC might be the cheapest, but lately my round of new equipment has me irritated at my previous sloppiness and failure to use a proper scientific method which ended up rendering my equipment contaminated and in the end gave me more work, but I DID manage to salvage some bullets, just too damn bad it took me about 4 more coats...

Another reason why I like PC is because now I do not need to mess with LUBES. I can buy regular Hard CAST lead bullets and shoot them and no worries about lube or any of that crap being needed. The pills are just so nice and clean. Ya gotta love them.
